Reccomend me a sound system? (mk1)
I've got a (more or less) stock '85 mr2- sound system is origonal, save someone put in a cheap crappy cd player (that cant play cds anymore) at some point.
So, I'm replacing the sound system- all of it. Open to suggestions, but I dont want to put a sub behind either seat- Where else might I put one in this car? I'm thinking a tight 8", possibly two of them if convenient. Whats in that center console part between the seats, in the rear? Anyways, Someone was also selling some door trim that allowed for 6x9's, I may track down that thread and purchase those. I'll need new speakers, all around, and a decent cheap head unit with an input... edit: Wasn't quite done- was being rushed out the door... The reason I'm looking for a decent cheap head unit as opposed to a nice one is because I intended to eventually build my own "head unit" by using a 4 channel amp for the speakers and using programmable microcontrollers to build a headunit-like interface for some sort of computer based mp3 player type thing- the reason I want an input for now is so that I can just plug in any standard music device for the time being. He was trying to hook me up with some "local" deal/installer 3,000 miles from where I'm located, nevermind that.
I'm going to start fabricating my custom head unit tonight (long term project, dont expect results anytime soon) but I still dont know where to throw a sub in this sucker. (other than behind the seats- I'm pretty much stuck with finding space in-dash or in the console) |

How about speakers?
I replaced the headunit with one from my other car, it sounds better overall but I think the speakers are blown. The ones up front look like fairly nice walmart units (heh) but they also sound like they were blown out. The rears I think are 3.5's in this car, and are inherantly worhtless... I've got a pair of decent 3.5's from my old car I could move in, but what are the chances I could shove something a tad less uselss in back there? Maybe some light fabrication could see some 4x6's? I cant seem to find much information on people replacing the speakers in these cars, but I have a really hard time believing people stick with the stock setup... even for such a tiny cabin, they sound awful, and have barely enough power to overcome the sound of the stock engine when I'm cruising through town with the window down. |

well it looks like the PO put some sort of speakers in mine (the front 2) and i dunno how to remove them to look into replacing them. he also managed to cut up the wires so i had to run new wire to each speaker.

Well, that explains why the rears in my '85 have some random ass looking wire running to them under the carpet. Also means someone must have grabbed trim pieces from a newer car to put them in, because there is clearly trim over the speakers in the rear... I'm starting to think I could, with enough effort, fabricate custom trim parts out of fiberglass for some 4x6's or something in the rear... |

If I wind up making moulds, and they wind up looking good in the end, I'd probably offer them up. Or at least sell the moulds.
