My 6th grade teacher took the road less travalled and taught us aerodynamics. Mostly how airfoiles of wings on airplanes work. From then on I was thinking about everything I saw that moved through the air and how air flows over objects. I designed and built a carbon fiber catamaran. And a sail powered car; again, my own design. I think just having bitten the bug so early is why I can look at something and know almost instantaniusly know exactly what the air will do. Vented hoods are an excelent way to increase downforce, and without increase in drag. The air, as it comes out of the vent, goes over the car, and adds downforce from the vent all the way to the back. The vents also reduce air pressure underneath the car, which creates a vaccum and pulls the car onto the road. A rear difusser also creates downforce, like Ferraris are but they must be preceeded with a smooth panelled underbody. ---amazing story about the audi tt--- no wind tunnel is better than real life example. And what an argument to have a wing on a fast car!

Vented hood encourages air entering through the grill and passing through the radiator to immediately exit through the vents and join the stream flowing over the wind shield. The fast moving air passing over the bonnet is of a higher velocity and thus lower air pressure and the higher air pressure building up on the firewall in the engine bay (trunk in MR2) wants to go there. Now, in a standard front engine setup air will build up on the firewall and exit out of both the gap at the end of the bonnet but also below the car creating lift (edit: decreasing downforce more accurately actually) (OW!) Also the high air pressure pocket in the engine bay decreases the airs ability to enter through the grill in the first place since fluids like air will always try to maintain an equilibrium in pressure while it will force it in to a point but basically air can only enter as quickly as it's leaving. Now in the MR2 because air entering can't exit the bottom that's one less usual advantage to hood vents which is significant but none the less hood vents will improve downforce, improve cooling and decrease drag. Considering it's usually not a very expensive mod it's a great one. Go for it! |

andysautosport.con has wind splitters and canards, the canards would help quite a bit i made some for my c26swapped rwd 93 civic ex coupe. I did it for looks but the d1 and nascars are doing similar things to cause more downforce.

have been thinking about this my self and I think that I might have to go ahead and do this to my mk1 which I will also have to mod the frunk to do this in my application. the fire wall behind the radiator will have to be angled about 6 or 7 inches to the windshield and the top of the radiator about the but toward the front of the car.... I was thinking about how there can not possibly be enough airflow and any downforce added is a good thing..

here is what I have come up with it requires the modification of the firewall behind the radiator.

I don't think aero is the last thing big car companies look at, but their priorities are not quite like enthusiasts'. They're usually more interested in reducing drag at "normal" operating speeds than in stabilizing the handling at double or triple those speeds.

If they cared about weight, they'd all be carbon fiber . . .
