Can I practice what I preach?

So I know how to do a paint job right. I know the equipment that you are meant to use. I know how many hours you are meant to put into getting the body ready. However.......doing it is another thing.

So this is one of those threads in which people either show they know how is done or show how little they actually did know to begin with To lay some groundwork I brought my mkII mr2 wrecked and patched it up. Well since then it has been a trouble child and thing after thing has given up so now has a motor rebuilt, then another motor then a gearbox when that blew to. I decided to patch up the paint a little to make it look decent and the body guys messed up the paint match so bad it might of let a preschooler mix it. Then my dad tore the front bumper so I'm going all out and I'm going to do a full front repair and respray.

I'm pretty casual about it so any suggestions or anything I'll take on board as I go. This thread has a few reasons for existence, one is for valid input, another is I am bored right now and also I would like to shamelessly show off my success or failure in doing this

So when I got this car last year it looked like a$$. These pics are after I was done pulling off about 10 fake plastic vents and countless stupid vinyls inside and out.

Then I fixed it and horah! it looked like this

Stupid slogan is complimentary

Then the bumper got torn and the paint on the left guard doesn't match so now I am at this, I'm removing the number plate holes and shaving them all smooth I put pins on the other side and fiberglassed them into place to hold the body filler over the top and am making some new supports (wood ftw) to hold the bottom lip after the stock ones were all bar on torn and it was cable tied up. I still need a front lip but I'll get to that later and if I have to make a custom glass one out of the old split lip.

I also brought some proper paint guns my dads ones I borrow are hopeless and keep clogging and stopping plus are siphon guns. Fathers day special $100 down from $200 ($100 is a major outlay for me) and I was recommended them by another at home painter so gravity feed HVLP guns it is which will be easy for the compressor to keep up with the low pressure requirement. One is course the other fine with a touch up gun, and I get to keep them afterwards

Hopefully my next posts are a little shorter, oh yeah and I am also thinking of painting it a dark blue/purple, yes I know need a perfect body for that colour or it shows all part of the project.
If the owner doesn't mind me posting this, like this 2

are you planning to repaint the engine bay before or after the 2jz swap

suggestions
1. buy one of the sca $5 gun cleaning kits with all the brushes etc otherwise they will block
2. buy good thinners
3. wait till summer or hire a big arse space heater for the garage
4. lots or prep and lots of wet sanding
5. leave a little paint left over and put about 10% paint into the clear it will give the paint more depth more shine and should help to stop the clear blooming as easily
6. get a goddamned job
7. get a orbital sander
p.s. i have your money for you
well the $500 not the $3000 im getting there
email me your bank details

i currently have my bumper and guard primed ready for painting but **** weather has closed in for the next two weeks so may be a while before it gets done

My back hurts like a mofo today I'm already sick of sanding and I've only half done the front bumper. I got one of the wood supports into place and spent a couple hours fixing one side of the front lip removing scratches and scars, and all the rusty bolts still stuck in it. I've also fixed up the front frame removed all the rust and lay down some primer on it before top coating it black again.....and you can't even see it underneth the bumper.

Also minor setback after making the first supports and fiberglassing them over my mum burned them -_- Don't know why she does things like this every time I'm here. New ones are better though so no worries. Used marine sealer on the supports which is used to seal the hulls on wooden boats before they are glassed and painted, it smells of metals from the anti growth and evil sealers it has in it which I'll take as a good thing.

I also just primed the bumper in a grey primer for the first time soooo much clearcoat had to come off before I did. so tomorrow I can hunt for high/lowspots with a sanding block and spot coats. I also hopefully start glassing up the supports and the tear on the left side tomorrow.

Also new paint guns = win, the coarse gun sprayed so nice and predictable and smooth unlike the old siphon guns I used. And they took a quite thick heavy primer without fault or having to thin an assload.

One thing that might save some time taking the paint down is aviation stripper. Get the brush on type as the spray on tends to get everywhere. Keep in mind not to use it on plastic or previously bondo'ed surfaces.

Are you going to use single stage or clearcoat?

I have some kwik strip and am going to use that around some of the damaged door and such. The power sander I have can be pretty damn aggressive though just doesn't get into the curves and such very well. The paint stripping actually isn't taking long the body shaping is since the bumper is so cut up. The rear is a bit dented up as well, the last paint job also went over the top of some stickers that are still embedded in the paint.

I'd ideally want a good few coats of clear that I can polish it up real nice. I have some clear but not enough to do the car by far. Also don't know if I go metallic or not in which case it really does need a clear to look nice. I see a lot of wet sanding in my future though, a hell of a lot.

I'm trying desperately hard to keep it away from him he has already tried to use my paint guns for a tractor. At least he isn't bashing anything about the project except the colour so far

Thanks I just learnt by working and fixing my racecars, I'm handy with a gun but have never been one for the prep work which is 90% of painting. This car is going to get done a bit better than my racecars it is actually going to see a sanding block So far I'm liking how the bumper is shaping up the new supports are in place and look good plus the front lip is coming together nice as well. Its a cheaper custom bumper than a bomex bumper or something and should still look clean and not all veilside.

Woot almost got the bumper done apart from the f***ing fiberglass my dad keeps forgetting to bring home I only need a little bit of glass mat from his massive sheet of it but he keeps forgetting it Also asked him to bring home the new guard I brought ages ago in prep for this but forgot that as well 3 days in a row it looks like I'm going to land up driving for 20 minutes to go get it from his work myself.

Fixed the left hand lip thing it has been split and broken and now it is glued/screwed/ghettoized back together. I was trying to fiberglass it properly but had no glass mat so I give up waiting I have to move on I can't wait forever. Put a steel support under the front lip to stop it sagging and flapping about and redid the front shave a couple times after finding heaps of high/low spots wet sanding with a sanding block, its now pretty close to being a smooth curve again now from looking like it had been punched numerous times in the nose.

Everything looks like its not progressing because there is a lot of things being done you can't see or make minimal difference like the tow hook has been moved because it was in the way, the front fog mounts have been redone and welded, new bumper supports have been added and other little things. It has also taken a bit of work to get the smooth curve on the front but it looks almost like it did when I put the first round of bondo on it. And that lip has taken ages to get to look like that its was so bent up, its coming together though.

Haven't decided on rim colour yet actually the charcoal is not bad but I might change it for something else. I told people to stop posting purple in that mkI thread or this would happen

It's looking great so far!

Come on, after that pimpin shifter bracket in your MK1 and some of the other stuff I've seen you do, I can't believe you didn't ghetto-rig a spray gun yourself!

What kind of experience do you have with different clutches on your MR2's? What have been your favourites and why?
