Side vents without the gill?

I've seen numerous MR2s without the gill / extra fin in the side vent. I've done loads of searching both here and with "teh googles" and I am having a devil of a time trying to figure out the story behind them. Are people deleting them by hand, or are they doing it via body kit? It seems that an easy half of the MR2s I've found online are missing the gill (which suggests it was a model year change), but none of the MR2 writeups or wikis have noted whether this was part of a late model facelift. THAT makes me think it's aftermarket.

Any help is appreciated. I'm going nuts.

Yeah. That's exactly what I'm talking about. Do they generally extend out away from the body more than the original vent? Will they "scoop more air"?

I don't like the idea of the fins being there. The throat area already strikes me as being really small for an intercooler to be able to do its thing.

I'm curious as to what those would look like installed on a mr2 not just a pic of the scoop itself. I don't really see anything wrong or bad looking with the factory ones though.

I've seen pics, I'm not wild about them. I like MK3 or NSX style vents better, but I don't think I've seen that on a MK2.

I don't know, but those scoops are teh sex. MSAGRO's got me reconsidering my metallic gray paint ideas. Looks pretty good sticking with white.

I've seen a lot of body kit images that had the open scoop, but I could never be sure if it was body kit + new scoops or if it was just all body kit.

Yeah, Bomex sides skirt have a vent with no bar. So do the Tom's side skirts, so do the Phoenix Power side skirts, so do the Air Walker side skirts, and so do the Gracier side skirts. Aeroware side vents also have no bar.

As far as knock off brands, Shine Auto side skirts also have no bar in the middle of the side vent.

The OEM side vents are fiberglass. You can delete the middle vent bar yourself if you know how to fiberglass. This will make them look like Aeroware side vents
