alternative for rear trunk support

so my rear trunk support has never worked.
is there a more reliable solition to fix it?
maybe dual hydraulic prop rods, like the ones that hold up hatches on most hatchbacks?

or is there a secret to make the stock parts work?

they are fine most of the time. Get another one they aren't worth anything. I'd give you mine if you paid $10 for postage from New Zealand but I need it.
