So I did a brake job this weekend, and I learned a few things:
1. The hand held vacuum pump makes bleeding a dream ![]() 2. I have a lot more work to do underneath the car ![]() 3. I have one odd sized rim on my car ![]() So I've got 3 14x6 (two up front one in the back) and one 14x7 (in the back) The question being, is this a problem or just a WTF? All the tires are the same size (195/60-14), and my two back ones are just about slicks. So, the question is do I put two new tires on the back and save up loot for a new set of wheels and tires, or do I sacrafice size/style/quality and get what ever wheel and tire combo I can afford now? Any input is appreciated, don't hold back. Or, if any one out there has the same problem and wants to trade a 6 in. for a 7 in. or vice a versa, hit me up ![]() |

Other than asthetics, I don't think the different wheel widths is a big deal, if only temporary even though it's uneven on either side. But I do think having the same size tire all around on an MKII (especially if they're thin baldeenies out back) is begging for a drop-throttle oversteer slip-up.
I'd do what you suggested, try to get another 14x7 for the rear and mount some new 205s back there. |

As you already recognize, it is not the ideal set up. The OEM size was 195/60-14's in the front with a 14x6 wheel and 205/60-14 with a 14x7 wheel. A rear wheel was probably bent along the way and someone replaced it with a front wheel.
Personally, I would try to find a pair of used tires on an interim basis. A 195/60-14 will fit on a 14x7 wheel and a 205/60-14 will fit on a 14x6. Though finding a used 14" tire, let alone a pair, will be difficult to find. Having a smaller/shorter tire in the rear will reduce the gearing (quicker acceleration, lower top end), but not significantly or anything that you haven't already been accustomed to whether you knew it or not. The next best alternative is two new rear tires that will work with the front tires (i.e. speed rating, tread pattern) or search the forum and Craig'sList, etc… for a used set of wheels with tires. Keep in mind the cost of transportation and/or mounting and balancing. One note, if the rear tires are like slicks, anything with tread will be an improvement. I would imagine that Virginia gets its fair share of rain and you don't want to experience hydroplaning. |

people either give those stock 14s away or sell them very cheap - just buy a new set or rear pair and get wider tires for the rear

Somebody give this guy a wheel or two. It's not like 91/92 wheels are worth anything.
