91 NA Pad recommendations.....
I need to change my pads, they are new however they squeel super bad and yes, I changed my rotors when I did it and used disk brake quiet. I think its the cheap pads my dad picked up from Napa.
So can anyone recommend a pad to use that is QUIET and preferably not dust creating? |

The first thing I'd do when putting on new pads and rotors is to bed them correctly.
As for your pads, I'm guessing it's the cheapo bottom of the line Napa pads. I put cheap bottom of the line pads from shucks on my Honda when I was much much younger. They squealed like it was going out of style (and looking back on it a decade later, they stopped like crap). I'd get a good set of pads. First off, are you looking for quiet, performance or both? If you are only after quiet, Cermaic pads are very quiet. My wifes car used to have some cheap Napa or shucks pads on it that squealed pretty bad. Her moms BF did the brake job when she first got the car. When they wore out, I replaced the pads and rotors and installed Wagner Thermo Quiet Ceramic pads. I've ran those pads on her car for the last few brake jobs, and they have always been ultra quiet. The Wagner Thermo Quiet pads killed the squeal though, 100%. If that's the most import thing to you, Ceramic pads WILL kill the squeal. They make them for the MR2 and the price is reasonable. Baxter Auto Parts carries them, but so does Rock Auto, and it they have a pretty good price on them. The Wagner Part Number should be WAGNER Part # PD242 (Front) and WAGNER Part # PD309 (Rear) Rock Auto Catalog: Wagner Thermoquiet NA MR2 Pads Federal-Mogul - Wagner ThermoQuiet Brake Pads and Shoes As far as performance pads I've ran, if squeal is not to your liking avoid Axxis Metal Masters. They squeal like a banshee, unless they have changed them over the last 5 years. I've ran Wilwood BP-10's on my Wilwood BBK on my other car, and those are an aggressive pad with a nice coefficient of friction around the whole temp range, from 100 to over 1000 degrees. They only sequel a tiny bit when cold. Even though these pads are not an option for you, so I'm guessing your sequel is cheap pads, since the Wilwoods are a good track/street pad and they don't really squeal, only a slight bit during gentle stops with gentle pressure applied. Hawk HPS pads are a good, low dust street pad. Don't go to track day with it, but they are a nice aggressive street pad with low dust and not much squeal. I've ran them on my other car and they never squealed. I've ran Hawk HP Plus pads too. They had tons to dust, but it washes right off. If low dust is your think, Ceramic or Hawk HPS would be the way to go. As far as squeal, the Hawk HP Plus pads did have some squeal at first, but after Bed-In and Burnishing, the noise went down and really only came during gentle braking. I've never ran Porterfield R4S as a pad, I've ran them as rear drum shoes. Never had squeal, but I don't know what they'll do as pads on all 4 corners, as I never ran them as pads. Might be something to look into though, I've only heard good things about them. If you want an aggressive pad and can stand some noise under gentle braking, the Hawk HP Plus will give you a good aggressive pad that can handle daily driving and Autocross and Track Days without having to change out pads. I couldn't find a rear PN, only a Front PN for the Hawk Pads. I'd look into Ceramic pads since you want low dust and no noise. Performance will be less than an R4S or simlar, but they will be quiet and very low dust. Hawk HPS pads are a good, low noise and low dust street performance pad. I can only find a front pad part number though. If you really want a quiet pad with low dust, I all but guarantee the Wagner Thermo Quiet will kill the squeal. If you are taking your car to a track day, this is not the pad for you. If it's street driving, you'll be fine (and have very low dust and no squeal). As I said above, I've found these for the front and rear for your car, and baxters carries them if you want them from a walk in place, as does Rock Auto is you want to save some money and get them online. From the short bit you typed on what you wanted from a pad, I'd seriously look into this pad. Don't forget to "de-bed" the rotors to remove the contamination of the previous pads. Remove the contamination from the previous brake pads by sanding the discs with 130 grit sandpaper using moderate pressure. Use soap and water to clean discs’ surface after sanding and machining. Discs should be free and clear of oil, grease, and brake fluid. It takes some time, but I'd do it. I hope I was some help. Last edited by eckoman_pdx; 10-09-2009 at 07:45 AM.. Reason: typo |
