Suspension Techniques sway bars

For those of you that have them, how did you set the rear? More understeer or more oversteer? And also what other suspension mods do you have?

I'm unsure as to how I should set mine. I have Tein FLEX coilovers, 17x7F and 17x9R, 215/40F and 255/40R.

Depends on the spring rates on the flex. Im assuming the flex gave you a bit more oversteer. It comes down to how you want the car to drive. I would take oversteer anyday over understeer.

Softening the rear sway bar wont give you understeer, it will reduce oversteer. Big difference between the two.

Buy a book on suspension tuning so you can better understand how your suspension works. Then take your car to an autox or track day and push it so you know what things feel like rather than just setting them based on what someone on the internet says. I'd rather read a book on something than follow what I read on the internet.. someone that doesn't know anything is less likely to write a book on the subject

Trial and error man! I'd hate to say it, but you're a bolt-on whore. You seem to read about things on the internet, then get excited about them and want to know how to do it before even knowing what it does (Ie. your cryo-treatment & shot peening threads). You ask where/how you can do it before you even ask why you'd want to. Prioritize!

Wow thanks for the personal attack you had to add to that! I hope that made you feel like a biger person for that.

at least you both added smilies at the end.

dustin has a good point about decreasing oversteer vs adding understeer. I misspeak when referring to that often. in a simplistic way either term is correct, but if you're going to really tune the car he is exactly correct.

do you have some understeer bias with you large tire stagger? if so, I'd certainly be tuning for more oversteer and less understeer (like maybe a smaller front sway than the st).

Yeah, I have a bit more understeer than before with the 255's. Which is why I posted here asking what I should set my initial setting at. Of course its all trial and error, but why start with the wrong setting to begin with when I could gather some input on what I should try first and if that works best, then I saved myself the time of having to adjust it again.

Also something I'd like to note, in my post about shot peen/cryo, I believe my title started off "What is...." and I also asked what each process did. I did not just staight ask where can I get it. Next time I would get my facts straight before posting and making myself look like an *******.

what are you looking to do with the car?

On the street, a bit of understeer is far preferable to oversteer. Remember, if you need it, oversteer is just a gas pedal away

It wasn't really meant as a personal attack, you just took it that way. That's alright though. And besides that, I dont care about looking like an ******* to someone on a forum, especially if I didnt intend to be one

Anyway, suspension tuning is too personal of a preference to just 'set it and forget it', everyone has a different way of driving and so what some people prefer to set their suspension with wont work for everyone. Besides, half the time, people just put suspension in their cars, but dont actually do any 'sporty driving' (besides speeding around in public roads, like Deshi); so they're making suggestions to you that aren't even from any experience (like Deshi ).

My point is that there's a lot of other things you can do to change the way your car handles than just bolt on a sway bar. You have fully adjustable coilovers! Spring rates, shock dampening levels, rebound levels.. even tire pressures will affect your understeer/oversteer/turn-in/etc. Sway bars are good, but with the money you dumped into adjustable suspension, you should be making use of them

Sorry if you got offended

Whatever, I'm not losing sleep over it, I just didn't think those extra comments were necessary.

I know I have a lot of suspension tuning to be done, but like I said, I was just trying to get an idea of what other people were running so it could help me get an idea of what to set my base setting to.
