Each "way" refers to seperate voice coils on the same cone to save space and for better response on the speaker. Each coil responds to a different range of frequencies and is tuned for those frequencies. When you remove the front cover you should see seperate speakers all mounted together.

This is a 2 way speaker:
![]() This is a 3 way speaker: ![]() In a nutshell, the 2 way speaker has 2 speakers in one assembly (woofer & tweeter). The 3 way has a woofer, midrange, and tweeter. |

The OEM ones are component speakers (seperate tweeter and woofer). Best though is your decision as there are alot of varibles to which is better.

every brand is going to have their top of the line 2-way, 3-way, and components...
i've always liked a component set-up myself, but it does require mounting a seprate tweeter and crossover in addition to your midrange 'doorspeaker'...if you are going for good sound quality then you may want to look at some of the higher end component sets. you could run a nice set of components off of a good head unit or amp and have nearly the same sound as a set of 3-ways and a cheap 8" or 10" sub. go to any electronics store and try to listen for yourself, it will be a different sound than you'll get in a car but you can at least compare one against the other. i've always had good business with Car Audio Video - Car Subwoofers - Car Amplifiers and Speakers for good prices. |
