Stock subwoofer replacement

Mine has been blown for years. Toyota wants a crazy $$$ for one so what is a good alternative that has worked for other people?

I know it is a 5 1/4" in size but how many ohms?

If you have replaced yours what brand and model did you use?

Kicker just released an extermely slim mount 6.5" subwoofer. It's the CVT6. It might be a relatively easy replacement. Just make sure you put an amp on it.

I think a 6.5'' would be to big. I wanted to put my 6x9's in the spot where the stock sub when and they where to tall on the 6'' side.

The only true subwoofer I know of is the 5" Focal, but it's a little hard to find and it's not cheap and the performance is good considering it's a 5", but it's still just a 5". You will have to amp it, though. It seems like a decent chunk of change to put down on something that will give you minimal results.

If you want the stock look, and don't want a ghetto bumping in your car, it'd be worth it for sure. I am sure you can find ones that will fit in the stock place. Anyone else have any suggestions? Maybe sumthin you can buy new? crutchfield might have somethin...

Thanks for the info....and yeah....exactly....I don't want things to look ghetto with wires and a big amp behind the seat. I was going to go aftermarket on a head unit but no one makes a conservative looking double DIN unit. Most new models are that cheap looking silver plastic in color and have very gehtto looking multicolor displays. Besides no one makes a harness for 91/92 premium sound models so I'd have to cut wires (a sin).

If anyone made a plain black aftermarket headunit that looks like stock Toyota equipment with a green backlit LCD and green by night white by day buttons.....instant gold mine.

Anyway, how does the stock sub box behind the driver's seat come out? The lid over it just lifts up but I do not see any scews holding in the enclosure.

If I can remove the stock 5 inch sub....maybe a stereo shop can rig something for me.

If the premium sound is set up like the infinity packaged stereo's for chrysler products than the fix it to get the standard adapter but connect RCA's to the adapter and have them plugged into the RCA outputs on the deck.

And it may not be top brand named but if somebody needs a sub specific replacement speaker HERE is one... or HERE is the focal speaker or HERE is a Harman/Kardon replacement speaker....

IIRC, the tops of the speaker boxes just pop off.

If you have the stock subs, do you still have the little lockbox/storage area?

If the 91-92 Premium sound uses the same 15 pin plug that the 93 Premium sound uses, I have a connector with the RCA jacks already soldered on. I'll sell it to you cheap if you want it. Those are availiable.

There are 3 screws to take the cover off after you pop it open. I believe that if you push the seat all the way forward, you should be able to see some screws that take the grill off. Maybe that would release the inner sub box or there may be more screws under the grill or behind the carpet.

No storage area with the stock subs (one behind each seat).

I just recently re-did my system using Rockford Fosgate's Component 5 1/4" set. With a little custom fab work they fit in the oem subwoofer box, and sound amazing. The only thing is that to maximize their potential, I would recommend hooking them up as rear speakers, and find the option on your HU (Assuming it is NOT oem) that makes your rear speakers act like subwoofer's. Mine are crazy loud with the radio turned up. For even better sound, I replaced the 4 1/2" (i think they are) rear quarter speakers, and wired them into the harness as front speakers. I know this sounds like alot of work, but if you pull the radio you can just re-wire the oem wires. I have won two sound competitions (OEM Appearing category) with this setup without using any kind of amplifier.

Components:

Rockford Fosgate® - T152S

Rear Quarter Speakers:

Rockford Fosgate® - T142C

I believe this is exactly what you're looking for. They usually come in pairs, and I found mine for $50, and just sold the other one because I owned a '91. It is made by Audiobahn and fits perfectly in the factory enclosure. Here is a linc with a picture of it and some information:

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...hn+AMD50Q.html

The sound is great for what it is. I mean, it won't rattle your car but it is significantly better than the factory sub. Well worth the $25, and takes about 15min to install if you know how to remove the enclosure. No modification needed what-so-ever.

Hope that helps.

91/92 plugs are unique and so limited in number no one bothered to make a plug and play harness for them. 93+ amplified will not work. Sadly, my first 91 MKII was a base model with base sound system (no sub and the standard 2 plug 1987-00 connectors) yet sounded better than the premium sound in my current MKII.

Thanks for the offer though....I appreciate your help.

AWESOME! EXACTLY what I was looking for. Anyone want to buy the second one from me once I get mine?

Thanks to everyone who suggested stuff as well.

BTW, how do you remove the encolsure so the speaker can be swapped out?

Thanks for the tips.

This is my plan:

stock sub....replace the loudspeaker so it stops making the "plop" sound my blown one does.

front doors: Infinity Reference 5012i 5-1/4" 2-way car speakers at Crutchfield.com

rear side speakers: Infinity Reference 4012i 4" 2-way car speakers at Crutchfield.com

I've had great experiences with Infinity speakers in other cars....plus the price breaks on these models....well...brand new everything for about $100. This way I retain my stock tweeters so there is no need for a 3 or 4 way speaker in the door. If you ask me the stock rear speakers are too small and lack mid range. The highs are very annoying from them. Granted, 4 inch speakers do not go boom boom but I want to hear deeper notes.

I think it says they are no longer available on the right.
