Stereo System Illumination Bulbs

My son has an SW20 1992 which is a Jananese import into the UK.
Some of the bulbs which illuminate the radio/tape cassette and the CD player have ceased to function. The local Toyota dealer says that replacement bulbs are not listed in their parts listings.

The bulbs are approximately 2mm in diameter and have a green removable cap. The only bulbs I can find on the net are probably twice this size.

Does anyone have any idea where we can get some replacements and are they a push fit or soldered into the circuit board?

Can you take a pic of the bulbs?

yeah, try to get a picture up...did you take bulb out yet?? you may be able to take it into the dealership and have them match it with something.

not sure about the one on the right but the 2 on the left here are similar to bulbs used in the gauge cluster, not sure if these are similar to what you have or not...the 2 pictured would also be a push fit type, no soldering needed.

If you need the left or middle ones - I have a whole bunch of spare bulbs (but no sockets - you will have to reuse it)

Thanks for the replies.

I've taken a few pics. The first one's not very sharp but shows the bulbs. Both normally have the green cap in place but one has been removed to show the bare bulb. The other two also show the bulbs with and without cap.

I have measured the diameter of the bulbs and this is 3.1mm - smaller than the normal panel illumination bulbs which are like the one shown on the right in Chuck's post.

I have tried to pull one of the bulbs but it really doesn't want to pull out so I'm assuming that they are soldered. Whether they are just a bulb or a unit complete with holder I don't know.

Those like like XLamp bulbs. You can go to superbrightleds.com and replace them with LEDs. http://www.superbrightleds.com/pdfs/XLamp7090XR-E.pdf

Thanks Ben will look into that route.

Meanwhile I've just found a local repair shop where the guy thinks that he can sort it - he even has some bulbs that will probably do the trick. He's got the units and will give me a call when he's had a chance to look at the job.

We'll see what happens.
