They are 4 1/4 i think or somewhere around that size. Many say that due to the cabin being so small though that you don't need them because rear should only fill in the back section. Though i prefer having them in and i've been looking really closely at phoenix gold and dayton.

A 4" will work. There are very few 5.25" speakers that work also.

Pretty much any 4" speaker will fit back there. As Ben said, there are a few 5.25" speakers that will fit back there as well. Most 5.25 will require some cutting, but almost any 4" fit fine. You really don't need much bigger than 4" Brand wise, get whatever you think sounds good. Also, for future reference, 6.5" will drop into the front fine. I'd look for a good set of 6.5" components for the front, and get a good matching 4" rear set.

save your money and buy better speakers for up front. all it takes is $110 and you will have a great set of budget speakers for your doors and tweeters.

Honestly though, 4" speakers aren't much price wise...so it' wouldn't cost much to upgrade those as well. |

true, but for any sort of actual good sound from them, you are looking at 30+...
for like $140, you can get the CTD CL-61A's with the TW-24 tweeter upgrade (or not, i's like $30 less, but the TW24's are SOOO worth it. especially if they are going to be amped), it's what I'm currently running in my trophy winning sound quality car. some plus sides are: The tweeters can be popped into the stock location, the woofers mount effortlessly in the doors, and they are great for the price, especially amped. CDT Audio CL-61A - CDT Audio Classic 6.5" 2-Way Component Speakers or the TW-24: CDT Audio CL-61A/TW-24 - CDT Audio Classic 6.5" 2-Way Component Speakers |

Honestly though, $200 should be able to get you a set decent components and decent rear speakers if you look around for a good price. You should have to pay much more than $250 for a decent component set for the front + decent rear speakers. You should be able to get it all for less if you look around. I don't really consider that too much money to spend, and I think it's worth the money to get better sound. |

for $250, I'd rather buy the component set I listed and buy a intro amp to run the set on, much better quality sound plus louder then running right off off the headunit (I can get a Kicker ZX200.2 for $65, so it's not too bad.)

the $150 set of components on that kicker amp would sound great to someone coming from HU power on a pair of coax's. |

As for speakers, I'll just stick with My old Phoenix Gold Xenon components and subs (I miss old Phoenix Gold, hate the stuff the new owners (Rodan Audio) put out). I got them @ a song of a price too. Great great speakers. I still have a spare set and a few spare subs left. I suppose it helped I lived 20 minutes from Phoenix Gold, LOL. But I have enough left over equipment from over the years, I won't be spending any money for awhile on speakers and subs. When it does come time, I'll spend it on Exile Audio, cost be damned. Exile IS Phoenix Gold from yesteryear. The old Phoenix Gold engineers and audiofiles, the guys that designed the Tantrum, Titanium, Xenon, all there old school good lines...left awhile before they were sold and started Exile Audio ("exiled from pg, hence the name exile). They make some great stuff...and are also headqaurtered here in Portland...so it works for me. Top end product and I can keep it local!! But for the average MR2 owner (I.E. not us), spending that much money on a set of speakers is too much (even if it is a deal to some of us). For those people, $300 should give them a decent entry level set (or higher, depending on hook-ups) of 6.5 " component speakers, coax rear 4" ones and a 4 channel amp, which is almost as much as they'd ever need in a car like an MR2. Pair that with a decent HU with a good set of 4V pre-outs or higher, and there you go. |

they are OKAY. I'd buy them for the fact that they are great budget speakers, plus Baktasht freaking rocks.

They are ok at best, I'd get something else. Contrary to what emspowered's site says, the PG Ryval speakers DO NOT have a Kevlar® brand composite fiber cone and DO NOT have a Butyl rubber surround. They have a paper cone and a foam surround. This is true for all the Ryval speakers and subs. I have seen these speakers in person at several stereo stores as well as at Phoenix Gold's HQ, and as said, they have a laminated paper cone and a foam surround. Take them for what they are: they aren't great, they are entry level OEM replacement speakers. If you are looking for anything at a good price to replace the worn out (and probably shot) OEM speakers, he sells these at a good price. If you want something nicer, these aren't for you. I personally would never buy a product with a foam surround and a paper cone.
Don't get me wrong, I've been a Phoenix Gold fan since the 90's, but the Ryval line just sucks. It doesn't live up to the Phoenix Gold name. The Phoenix Gold Radial SD line is MUCH better, closer to what the old Z-Rated line used to be. If you want Phoenix Gold, the Radial SD line is a much better choice. I'd recommend those over the Ryval crap anyday. If you want to stay at base entry level, the old Phoenix Gold Octane line is better that Ryval as well (though you'd have to search ebay for it). All Octane speakers and subs have an aluminum plated injection molded cone and a butyl rubber surround. Here is a direct link to PDF on the PG website that tells you about the Ryval speakers, as well as the Phoenix Gold phone number if you want more info on their products. Also, the Ryval line is not the high end line from Phoenix Gold, but for an entry level component set they actually do pretty well compared to anything else in the same price range. Sure, if you want to spend 3x - 5x as much you can definitely get a better set of components, but for the price the Ryval's are a great budget set of components for those who just want to upgrade from their crappy old stuff and get a good set without having to spend a few hundred. |

+1 for save your money and spend it on a good set of front components.
I have a set of 4 inch based Infinity Kappa components in the front and some 8 inch subs in the rear powered by a JL 300/4 amp in my car and thats it. My system sounds incredible. Ditch the rears. They suck, and they screw up your soundstage. If you get some spacers made from some MDF you can put some NICE ass 6.5s in the door and have GREAT midbass response and imaging. And the PG series described above are prolly the cheapst damn components Ive ever seen. They will outperform any coax speaker of the same size, for the price. Even if youre an audio n00b running off the deck power youd see gains from installing them into your doors. Most tweeters of component systems sit perfectly in the MK2 tweeter covers on the doors. Its EASY to install components into an MK2. |

i just installed a alpine deck and only the front speakers are hooked up. i'd like to have to get new fronts and backs and run an 4-channel amp on them. I have an old 10 in planet audio sub i'm thinkin about putting in there to... i gotta get a box for it though..........but, if those phoenix gold's are not good enough to through a mild amp on then i guess im gonna have to find some different speakers.

buy a box from Baktasht for your sub.
You can amp the PGs... I'll be writing up a full review on them soon. so if you want to wait until then... |
