remove cup holder etc, install scanner?

I have a 2001 MR2 Spyder. I would like to remove the cup holder, cigarette lighter, ash tray assembly and install a Uniden BCT15 scanner in dash using a DIN stereo mount. I also want to replace the factory cd casette radio with a in dash radio-cd-gps. Has anyone ever removed the cup holder complete assembly and put something else there in it's place. I could easily add another cigarette lighter if needed. I was considering a HD-CD-GPS radio if they are worth the extra money. dave
