carpet color
i was wondering if anyone has tried dying their carpet before? i have a black carpet and its just kind of faded looking and i was wondering if redying it black would seriously make it look cheap or awful, or if its something thats tottaly doable

When my uncle restored his mustang, he redyed all the carpets. It actually turned out pretty well and certainly did not look cheap. The carpet turned out to look like a "new" carpet. Biggest thing to do before redying the carpet would be to clean it very well.

awsome thank you so much!! do you remember what type of dye he used? was it a special automotive dye cause i know most like clothing dyes you have to wash the clothes while dying, but i looked up on google auto dyes and they have some just spray on ones.

The dye depends on the material. Most cloth is a velour, or plush, material. You could use regular fabric dye from your local arts and crafts store (I am looking to use Rit dye from Joann-Fabrics). However, I have heard success with using a spray can from SEM (SEM Products - Catalog).
One thing is to note that you can't really dye fabrics too far out of their spectrum, ie you cannot dye deep orange fabric a light green color but you can dye a light gray color a dark brown. The key is to clean the fibres throughly first then gradually work in the dye without matting down the fibres. Good luck. |

pardon the douchebag moderators of the site, but:
ishbog's carpet dye *update 8-30-08* - Team Integra apparently the trick is ~8 packages of RIT dye, 2 canisters of salt, warm water- mix together in a trash can and let sit for hours, days or weeks depending on how much of a color change you want, then rinse, dry and install. i used the duplicolor spray on my carpet and it isn't holding up very well (not that i expected it to). my carpet looks like ass anyway, so i may try the above mentioned method next. can't make it look any worse... edit: RIT website also has some interesting combos for color change. for example, changing blue to black involves mostly black dye, with some dark brown added to help mute the bluish tint left over after dying. |
