Don't worry about buying rear speakers, the car is too small to need rear fill. Add the money you would have spent on rears to what you plan on spending on fronts, and buy a good set of components. I put in 6.5's and had to make a spacer ring and trim the speaker shrouds in the door panels. I bought Phoenix Gold RSd's because I read some really good reviews, but I also hear good things about Diamond Audio, and you really can't go too wrong with Infinity.

I have my components powered by my head unit (55 watts per channel). I wouldn't worry about 6x9's. The components and a 10" sub should be plenty of sound. I have a JVC Arsenal ADV-790 head unit, Phoenix Gold RSd65CS components, Phoenix Gold RSd4 rear speakers (which I only have for the purpose of surround sound when watching DVD's, otherwise I wouldn't have any rear speakers), a Kicker ZX300.1 amp powering an Elemental Designs SQ10S2 subwoofer in a box (w/ .4 cubic ft of airspace) that I built behind the passenger seat. I absolutely LOVE my setup. It's not overly obnoxious with the bass, but it has great overall balance and clarity.

you realize the 55 watts coming out of a head unit is peak right? They usually only put out about 18-22 watts RMS.. If you spend the money on components you may as well spend the money to amp them in my opinion

Here's a suggestion:
Buy a good pair of 6,5" componet speakers, and install them in the door. (polk audio mm6501 fit right in)

Buy a pair of decent subs and fit them in an enclusre addapted to the mr2. The rockford forsgate P3L-S10 fits right in, and leaves space for the targa behind the seats.

Buy a decent amp to power both the front speakers and the sub.

No doubt the easiest way to get decent sound in an mr2.

You're right. Originally, I was thinking about a 5 channel amp to power the whole system, but I had the amp already, so I decided to try it out the way it is now. It WOULD sound better with the components powered by a good amp, but I am very happy with the sound as it is... maybe I will change it up in the future, but for now I am very happy with it.
