i have the 91 premium system... just to clarify... there's no available harness that i can purchase online to make it plug and play right???

... if this is the case, the one that crutchfield is selling with the amp bypass harness wouldn't work in my car???

Does anyone know if it is possible to fit 6 1\2" subs in the original sub boxes behind the seats?

Originally both the door speakers and subs are 5 1\4", but doors can take 6 1\2" speakers. So i need to know if this is the case with the original sub boxes as well.

Kicker makes a 6 1\2" sub. If this fits I''ll try that. If not I have to try the 13cm sub that focal makes.

The stock rear speakers in my 93 were 3-1/2" - no premium sound system. Aftermarket 3-1/2" speakers fit right in without modification.

If you are willing to cut and bend you can go pretty big though like Monopolizedinc mentioned earlier. I have JBL 5-1/4" in the rear and they are 125W RMS and 500W Peak, not a small speaker by any means. Just had to remove the bracket for the stock speaker and maybe bend something out of the way and drill new mounting holes. I also managed to put a 6-1/2" in the door which is a 150W RMS and 600W Peak. Had to cut metal to make it fit and also trim the inside of the plastic cover. Also both sets came with a pair of 1" titanium tweeters that fit just fine in the stock location without any modification.

I picked up some 2 way 4x6s, I was thinking about putting them in the back, replacing the 3's on my 91 w/premium sound. Any thoughts?

hello guys, i own a 93 hardtop non-turbo.

the car came with an aftermarket hu(alpin) and 2 - 6" x 9", 3-ways in the back and stock tweeters.

from reading this thread i can install -

6 1/2" woofers in the doors with some work
1" tweeters with some work
5 1/4" speakers in the rear side panels with some work.

other posters mentioned about stock subwoofer boxes in the read storage compartments..... what are these? like i mentioned, my car came with aftermarket speaker boxes with 6x9's.

the stock woofer boxes would be in the storage compartments under the "shelf" behind the seats you would see the grills on the front in the carpet if you have them.

I am assuming the 6X9's are in boxes sitting on the storage lids

yes the 6x9's are in walmart boxes behind the seat above the storage compartments.

honestly, they really don't improve the sound at all. i've faded them out and the tweeter and door sub perform the same.

i noticed that i had wires running to the side panels. i'm assuming i can install speakers there(hopefully 5 1/4's), wire them up and it will be ready to go?
