accel DFI?
good? bad? ease of setting up? learning curve? p&p is of no concern.
the DFI seems like a pretty big name brand with the domestic guys, but i havent heard much talk about it at all on our side of the pond.. im sure the total lack of pnp support is a primary reason, but id appreciate any input ![]() |

I would imagine it would run okay. You might run out of outputs, and I'm not sure if it does peak/hold injector driver (you didn't mention which gen DFI).
I'm not sure where you are, but this is one of the systems that would be fun to play with. I would give you a discount on tuning it if you live in/near Denver, CO. |

id be tuning and installing it myself, but thank you! cant learn if you dont try
trying sometimes means screwing up pretty bad too.. but hell, its a 5sfe, its not like i dont have 3 spares in my garage years ago jim tuned his own and made a massive improvement over stock.. i think the margin between a great tune and OK tune might not matter much on this engine. i think im looking at gen6's, the gen7's are too new/expensive.. maybe i got the numbers wrong, but its not the brand new one. i think i can gain a pretty significant gain in cruise speed fuel economy.. the 5sfe is archaic when it comes to management.. ive seen the slightly older ones go for as little as 300 bucks with a pigtail harness. |

Well, make sure you wire it correctly, and have at it! 300 bucks for a DFI sounds like a steal, make sure it works.
Its front-end is fairly user-friendly. If you have issues, don't hesitate to drop me a line. We can sort them out together. |

they pop up sporadically for 300-600, im kinda keeping an eye out for a deal right now. ill dig thru their tech info and tuning software and see if i get confused anywhere (i probably will). thanks!
how do you tune timing? keep advancing until it knocks, then turn it down? im sure theres little tid bits that make the good tuners, the good tuners.. but im having a tough time grasping the concept of how to make a base timing map, and when to know where to add advance. |

The basic way to work with timing is to sit on a dyno and advance till the TQ output does not increase then pull back 1-2 degrees.
Good luck...like you said...couldn't have chosen a better engine to tune on then the 5s for practice :P |

Weasy nailed it. Do NOT use detonation as the only test for ignition timing! You will wind up with WAY WRONG timing!
The theory behind timing is not too complicated. If you are curious, go ahead and email me and we can have an in-depth discussion. |
