It doesn't "Damage the ecu" it could blow up your motor. It is just a very stupid way to manage a fuel system, it is not controlling variables that NEED to be properly, accurately, and precisely controlled for an engine to run well and reliably. All a piggyback is doing is taking information, changing it, and sending it to the ECU, sometimes it tries to extrapolate and do things that full engine management solutions do by changing variables in the ECU that when changed together produce an effect similar to the one managed explicitly by a standalone computer. It's all guesswork and it can lead to your engine blowing up.

They're a CHEAP way to do things for people that can't justify spending more money.

It's all around a bad idea, the article I posted has more information from someone who has more experience than I do with EFI systems.

Once again this phrase has meaning:

A professional ROM tune IS an acceptable alternative to a standalone ECU, but usually it will be a ROM tune for a recomended mod-set. Any modifying you do to the engine all the way from a cold-air-intake to an entire head swap changes how it operates, and thus changes the way the ECU operates. You must remember that when you slap new injectors into your motor, the computer doesn't go: "Oh, look, new injectors" all it sees is different resistances than its used to seeing and it compensates for that.

That works alright for a lot of different kinds of mods, but once you start getting into extensive engine and fuel system modification it is a good idea to go with a standalone and have the car tuned professionally by a certified EFI tuner on a dyno.

So PETC, How about running a Greddy E-Manage piggy back on the 5s??

ANY sort of piggyback system is a band-aid and IMO crap. Doesn't mean it won't work. These things DO work, but they're crap.

Read the article I posted a while back, it specifically mentions the G'reddy E-Manage in not-so-flattering terms.

Yep i read it..looks like i need a stand alone, because im running the greddy e manage..I really dont know how its going to turn out, i mean my car is running but its winter and theres no way in hell im taking my car out..but thanks i didnt know that

Piggybacks are fine if you understand what you are doing and take the time to tune it right. An EMS will always give your more predictable, finite control though and for higher powered forced induction I wouldn't use anything else.
