1995 VIN research

I've started compiling a list of VINs for 1995 MR2s I come accross various places. I wish I would have done this a long time ago. I'm trying to determine a valid number of 1995 MR2s that made it to our shores instead of going on pure speculation as has most often been the case.

http://www.mr2.com/files/mr2/mk2/95/95vins-post.htm

The last 6 digits of the VIN is a sequential number, but I don't know if there are gaps in the numbers or not. Something interesting that I have noticed is is the 12th digit on the turbo models is always a 1 (so far). One of my theories (and hopes) is the last 4 digits are sequential. With the current range I have now, that would be 558 that came over in 1995. If my last 5 digit theory is incorrect, then with what I have so far, there would be 130 NAs and 494 Turbos, but I don't believe that to be the case. If you know any 1995 MR2 VINs, please let me know. I plan to do the same thing for 94s as well.

Well, I think my theory is incorrect. I found a turbo VIN that throws the sequence off. So the NA and Turbo had entirely difference sequence numbers. This may be possible for the other years as well. Well, I'll just keep collecting all that I can find. If you see a 95 VIN somewhere, please post it or PM me. I'm keeping an excel spreadsheet with the VIN, date I found it, miles, city & state, note if it is wrecked, and the source were I found it.

If I would have thought to do this 3 or so years ago when I started looking for 94+ MR2s almost daily, I'd have quite a list by now.

Earl

Build date on my 95 N/A is 3/95 and the Number is JT2SW21NIS0021836 The number on the door is Serial 357 Don't really know if that means anything but there it is. It's got almost 75K on it. The correct bright red color. I've only done a couple things to it. It has a Greddy exhaust, nology wires, took the restrictive air intake off and put on an unsilenced one. Drilled and slotted stoppers more for looks cept I needed new rear rotors and these were almost the same price for four as just the rears. Even with the old guy (me) driving it I get lots of looks and thumbs up.

The number on my door is 834 and the build date was 11/94. Hmm.

The door was not replaced. There is an additional serial number on the bottom of the build tag that has the full serial number and build date on it. And I messed up on the build date, its 4/95 That build info is on the back of the door jam.

Door tags

JT2SW21M5S0021796 - 11/94 - No. 834

JT2SW21NIS0021836 - 4/95 - No. 357

Here's a comparison between your doortag and mine. The VIN number sequence makes sense going by the build date, but that No. ### doesn't seem to fit in logically. If the VIN numbers are sequential for the NA models, then there were 40 between mine in 11/94 and yours in 4/95. The VINs on the turbo models seem to have really big gaps.

So that settles it. There is no logic between the door tag and that little serial number.

Course now hat I think of it with yours being a 94 and there were less than 900 or so 94s that might be why. dI think with your builed date being so late in 94 yours should have been a 95. But it has the M year designation, Oh well.

Brian, have you been to http://planet-torque.com/mk2/ ? It is David Hillman's original MK2 registry. It has a couple dozen entries or so for 95 MR2s. Most are quite old, it will give you a good start.
