    tachometer troubleshooting

I have a 1991 MR2 Turbo with a nonfunctioning tach. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot the tach?

    Yes.

You describe the symptoms of the problem, and we suggest possible issues that would cause them and their solution.

Especially true if the tach reacts slightly, and especially when it is warmer. I had that issue as well, just wanted to confirm the symptoms first.

    I did this today.

My tach was absolutely dead, no movement. I desolder one of the pins for the capacitor and the whole thing falls off. So I replace both and install my cluster back in my car.

Here's a tip, keep the clear plastic off, but screw in the cluster and plug in everything. I removed the tach needle on mine, and when you turn the key to ACC the tach zeroes itself out. After it zeroes itself out, install the needle, and start the car to make sure its working.

Went driving around for about half an hour and it works just like it should now. Now I need to tackle the speedo problem.

you should NOT need to remove the tach needle. I didn't when I replaced my capacitors.

I just felt it was easier to get to the capacitors if I completely removed the PCB, which required removing the needle.
