GB: Flatbottom Under Body Panels
"Flatbottom" Under Body Panels
Yes! They're finally back!! These are the original "flatbottom" under body panels designed by TomG of GRT Aerodynamics. The design has been slightly modified to be a better fit. A flat underbelly is an essential part of any sports car. We have 25 sets on order for our initial shipment which will be completed and ready for shipment the first week of January. This is a deeply discounted pre-sale. The prices advertised in this thread will be good through January 12th, 2008 Regular price: $519.99 Pre-sale discounted price: $399.99 Order and pay here with credit card or PayPal: MR2 Flatbottom Under Body Panels - $417.99 : EMSPowered, High Quality, Great Service, Low Prices Here are pics of the original design. the new design is almost identical with very slight changes: ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by Bak@EMSPowered; 12-08-2007 at 07:30 PM.. |

I wish there were better pictures of it from the underside. It looks very similar to mine aside from the cutouts.
These work guys, BIG TIME. |

HURRY!! ![]() Actually they make quite a big difference even at lower speeds... if you notice many newer well-designed sports cars have similar "flat bottoms" installed from the factory, such as the Lotus Elise and others. |

Yeah, that's the point. Was thinking about getting two mani's. Now you come up with the under panels. If I want to get two of these too which is gonna be another 836 on top of the 1300 for the mani's. Over 2000 at one time is a lot to spend. It would of been a lot more affordable if the timing was spread out a little more. My head is gonna be hurting from all these decisions.

3 orders placed so far. I'm sure these first 25 sets will go fast. So if you are wanting a set of these at this price, make sure you place your order

Wish I wasn't going to be dropping 10k on a turbo 2 here soon, this would be an awesome addition
. I am real interested to see how these perform, what the feel is like, etc. 400-500 bucks isn't cheap to just try out ya know? Yes some high-end cars use flat underbody panels, but what's the benefit and is it enough to justify the price? Not trying to rag on your product, I am just REALLY curious as to how effective something like this is. Anyone who has used flat underbody panels on a 2 or another car care to comment aside from 'omfg it works!'? |

All I can see is forum posts by people saying that it causes downforce, but no explination, or data as to how/how much. I am sure it's a good thing, hell ferraris and such have them, but I am curious as to how much of a difference it makes.
Go google 'how flat underbody panels work' and check out the first result :-p. Again, I'm not trying to bash your product or anything like that cause I am sure it works, just want to know the extent and how it's managed... |

It directs the airflow Brian. It effectively cuts through the airflow and aligns it on both sides of the panel. It reduces turbulence and it increases aerodynamics. Theres quite a bit more to it, but thats a good start.
Id be all over these things if I had that money layin around right now. |

To get slightly more technical, it speeds up the airflow underneath the car by cutting down on turbulence caused by gaps/hole/ridges/protrusions, etc. The result is a greater pressure difference between the "fast" air under the car and the slower, turbulent air going over the irregularly shaped top of the car (with mirrors/windows/wings/etc.) This pressure difference effectively sucks the car down to the road. The suction is limited when just using the flat undertray, but it will at least reduce lift if not actually generating downforce. It should also lower the C(d) (drag coefficient) of the car. Net result: your car does less work to maintain speed, which makes it a) slightly faster and b) slightly more efficient.
The plastic things that come standard on a '2 are a poor substitute for what they're selling here. these will flex less, and have a much cleaner surface and fewer gaps. |

Cool, makes sense. I'd still like to see technical data if anyone has any....I am also assuming this does very little for low-speed cornering and only effects high-speed applications like drag, or fast corners/straight aways?
Slide, care to explain how it feels different? does it eliminate that floaty feeling at high speeds? Can you feel the down force at high speeds? |

A quick and dirty explanation of the way it creates downforce is:
Air comes goes under the car in the front. Towards the rear of the car the underbody sits slightly higher. As the air expands in the rear, it "sucks" the back of the car down. This creates downforce. The other benefit is that it cleans up airflow and there is less turbulance under the car. This reduces drag, and also increases stability. In some cases flat underbody panels have been shown to add as much as 10% fuel efficiency just by reducing drag. |
