This coil gave me a 2 MPG increase. I went from a solid 36 MPG to a solid 38 MGP.It has worked with the factory ignitor for at least a year. The coil has been in junk boxes in my posession for 30 years, when I discovered it about 2 years ago I figured I'd find something to put it on.

Non aftermarket items on my Mk1 include a transaxle from a prizm with a gear ratio that dropped my RPMs by 1000 on the highway.

1988 4age injectors. I had to bypass the injector resistor and change out the connector plugs for the injectors.

Free:
Plenty of air in the tires
Shifting usually by 3K rpms
Try to keep it under 70 MPH on the highways and interstates

I record my fuel fill and mileage EVERY time. I have not missed one in 3 years.

In 2006, I put 13,500 miles on my Mk1 and averaged 36.12 MGP. I pumped 374 gallons of fuel that year into her.

In 2007, I clocked 16,462 miles and the years average MPG was 38.2

I even run A/C in the summer.

I LOVE my little Mk1! Even though I had to replace the alternator yesterday It still is cheap to operate and a blast to drive.

John

That is the average for all of 2007. In 07 I fill up 54 times. Occasionally it would be just over 42 mpg however the average for the whole year was 38.2. I was amazed that the big old coil made that much difference. John

My Google Map

I was reading the O2 sensors in MKIIs go out pretty quickly, is this the case with MKIs?

I average about 250-ish to a tank, and the tank is about 10 gallons. Rough estimate, I get about 25 mpg.

Standalone EMS. I mean a real basic one too!
I considered this for my car once upon a time, but the reality is I would not be buying it for gas mileage. Anyone remember Brad Bedell's yellow turbo mk2 about 2 years ago. I think It made something like 43mpg. Of course, you will not run 11's though getting that gas mileage.

I made 316whp@15psi, and If I didn't boost it and just mainly cruise around with light throttle I would get 22-26 mpg. With a stock ecu and safc.
The MR2 has a 14.3 gallon tank btw. The 250 mark is close to what I used to get when filling up with 9.5 to 10.5 gallons. I never ran my car to see the gas light come on.

Getting a stand alone and converting to Coil Packs will definitely increase you MPG if tuned properly.

This current sensor has over 50K miles on it. I have removed it and cleaned it once.

Today I pumped 8.83 gallons into her and had traveled 357 miles. That comes out to 40.4MPG and that is combo driving including a little A/C time.

BTW, my car runs out of gas going uphill when it takes 10.1 gallons to fill the tank.

40 MPG... that is very high. I have done an entire tank of shifting at 2.5k and still can't hit anywhere near the 300 mile/tank mark. This is when waiting until the fuel light comes on.

Other than the coils, do you have any other mods? I have a cold air intake, which I assumed was going to help w/ gas, but I didn't notice much of a difference.

Minus 2 mpg from your coils that puts it at 38, so I'm still about 12 mpg behind you for some reason.

I have a conical air filter 6 inches or so from the AFM. I have all 3 plastic under car covers on. I use Royal Purple(a synthetic) in the transaxle. I coast whenever possible so I can utilize the energy I have (already put into the car) in order to maintain forward velocity instead of converting it to heat with my brakes. My timing is advanced 2 degrees over stock. I am positive my TPS is adjusted correctly. I am sure my injectors are clean. My car has a header, working cat and the much hated (by others) Pacesetter Monza quad out exhaust system that I like very much. Installed with an ACT clutch and pressure plate is a Chrome Moly lightened flywheel. My engine is a rebuild that has 60 to 70K miles on it. I use the Wal Mart synthetic motor oil. I use the cheapest priced fuel I can find. My fillup yesterday was 8.8 gallons and traveled 350 miles for a MPG of 39.7!

Things that most likely don't matter:
I relocated my battery to the frunk
front and rear adjustable sway bars
Stock chin spoiler
Stock springs
Stock (small diameter 1986) brakes
TVIS is hooked up and working
EGR is hooked up and working
I have the correct ECU
Stock triangle rims
Car weighs 2400 pounds with 1/2 tank of fuel and no driver

Thats all I can think of at the moment.......John

With mostly highway driving the most I have ever gotten in one trip was 44 mpg. That was cruising around 60-65, I never EVER run the A/C..... Probably because one of my cars doesnt have it (the compressor clutch locked up. I never used it anyway so I got rid of it.) and I couldnt tell you if the unit in the other MR2 works or not.

My average is usually between 35-38 but I regularly see 40 and above when I do mostly interstate driving.

The BEST ways to save gas and they WORK unlike ALL of those 'gimmick' fuel saving devices (an episode of mythbusters tested alot of them on a Toyota Camry). But the best ways to save gas are simple, and you may not like them.

1.) use the cruise control as much as possible, feathering the throttle and tapping the brakes to go with the flow of traffic kill gas mileage.

2.) Cruise on the interstate between 55-65 you can see 15-20% savings in fuel by staying under 70.

3.) Dont treat every stop light like a drag race, shift around 2500-3000. You wont go very fast, but you will save a TON of gas.

4.) Stay alert while driving, if you can keep enough space between you and the idiot in front, you wont have to hit your brakes every single time they do. You can also time traffic lights, watch the cross walk signals, they will tell you if a light is about to change. Also try to watch to see if the light for the other direction of traffic is changing, if you time it correctly you can go through the light without stopping.

5.) Keep simple maintence items in mind, change/clean your air filter on a regular basis. Change your fuel filter often, change your spark plugs if you suspect one may be fouled or on its way out. Change your oil regularly, if you dont burn much oil I would suggest using synthetic. Also change your transmission fluid to synthetic, it will help your economy. Also as stated check tire pressures regularly.

6.) Since you have an MR2, you can do things other people cant. I like to cruise down twisty roads at about 55, and see how little I need to slow down to take a given corner. I do this on the way, and the way home from work. A few years ago I would have been cruising 75-80, and needed to slow down alot before attacking a corner.

Do you coast in gear, or our of gear? Most people like to think coasting out of gear saves fuel, when in fact it doesnt. For those of you who may not know while coasting in gear the ECU can shut down the injectors momentarily allowing essentially unlimited fuel economy, hence why I supplement braking with downshifting.

I coast in gear. With the Prizm transaxle, I can coast in gear a long ways. Sometimes when I cancel cruise control I have to double check that it is really off because it coasts so well. The earlier statement about having the TPS correctly adjusted was aimed at the fuel saving feature of the fuel shut off during coasting.

Those points about not slowing for curves is good to bring out. That is another reason my wife would rather not go anywhere in the death trap with me.

Watching the crosswalk signs are another way to pace yourself when comming to lighted intersections. I'm glad to see someone else using the not to obvious clues to light operation.

I purchased the transaxle off of Ebay. It was a new, never used item from a dealership. The description of the item was that it was for a Chevy Nova. I am guessing a 1988. I think the same car is the Geo Prizm which often came with a 4afe and even occasionally the 4age. The final drive gearing is 3.54 to 1 ratio instead of the common MR2 ratio of 4.33 to 1.
