Will not crank

My MK1 will not crank. All it does is click once really loud so I know the starter is doing something. It has a good battery and I replaced the starter but still does the same thing.

Any help would be great.

If your sure your batteries good then check that you have a good ground. Same thing happened to a friends car , after cleaning and tighting the ground everything was fine. Worth a try and it costs nothing

Yeah sounds like a bad battery cable connection, check the positive and ground. If they're good start looking for a starter.

There is a fat ground wire the goes from some coolant passage on the motor or tranny and directly to the neg. wiring terminal. Any ways, the bolt that held it on was broken off so we put it on the metal battery tray. All my accessories work. Should I try finding another place that is actually ON the motor to put the fat ground wire to?

That I would think is your engines main ground strap. It should be mounted on the engine either at the trany or the intake by the head. Someone else might give you better incite.

I found a bolt on the engine to put the ground wire on and it cranks! Thanks everyone!

Take off the timing belt cover and make sure its all spinning when you crank.

Or make sure the grounds on the ignitor are on.

It's always that bolt.... was it on a ground that connected to the intake manifold? Because on my 5SFE I had a detached ground there and it would cause my entire car's electrical system to shut down once I tried to start it and it wouldn't turn on again until I disconnected and re-connected the battery.

I was so worried, finally found that ground and life was good.
