Advice on exhaust diameter?

Hey guys, I was thinking about getting an exhaust made. Something headers back, cat delete, with a flex pipe. I have an 88 NA and I was thinking 60mm piping with a greddy or apexi muffler. Would that be too constrictive or no? Suggestions?

EDIT: Maybe something like this: HKS Carbon Ti Titanium Muffler Universal 60mm 96mm Tip:eBay Motors (item 200288689354 end time Sep-11-09 01:26:55 PDT)

Would not be too constrictive. My exhaust is 2" with a high flow cat, and it works (and sounds) perfect. I would think twice about removing the cat tho! I had a test pipe on my 2 for a very brief time...very brief. all depends on what you wanna listen to tho

I agree, thats the way i went, 2 inch cat removed and a trd header, it sounds alright at higher rpm and full throttle, but at low rpm and mid rpm with part throttle sounds like ass.

Anyone notice the garage door closed while the car is running? Healthy dose of carbon monoxide anyone?

You have to build up a tolerance to carbon monoxide some how.

2 1/2" max for an N.A. That's about 62 mm.

Sounds like the exhaust you're looking at a very good fit.

The 3" fart tip (96mm), could always be cut off. The fart tip doesn't improve performance, it just would make it sound like a ricey Honda.

haha spend a day at my shop! Doors closed, swamp coolers on high, 2 diesels running WOT on one side, 4 or 5 cars running on the other.. Possibly the occasional spray painting project here, oxy acet. cutting there, welding galvanized steel, not to mention all the asbestos dust floating around... do I already have cancer???

Maybe not out the center, but you could do the same thing but with one bend so it goes off to the side

I'll have to post some pics of my new custom exhaust.. Blacktop header running true-dual 1.75" with vintage Triumph motorcycle mufflers, loud... high flow converters are on there way

i took the piece that comes off the manifold, cut it off at that useless flex piping junk before it goes into the first bend, put a 2.5" Y-adapter on it, and ran two 18" glasspacks that are about 4" thick right out the back, no bends. no more cats. hoping that doesn't cause my check engine light to come on. my whole system cost $50. but i live in an area where we don't test emissions

Sounds pretty sick. I too live where emissions are of no importance Check engine light should not come on, as long as the o2 sensor is still plugged in... then again, when I was building my exhaust, I had to drive it down the road to the exhaust shop running nothing but the BT header, with o2 sensor disconnected, and I got no idiot light.

60mm is between 2.25" and 2.5", which is huge for a stock 4AGE. Realistically, you'll be fine with a 2" OD (50mm) system on that NA, and staying a little smaller will help keep the noise level down as well, especially with a small, straight-through muffler like the one you linked to. Larger tubing won't hurt power, since you're not messing with the manifold or downpipe size (and thus not effecting scavenging to any significant degree), but it will be louder and heavier, and will take up more space.

Given that it's been a month since you posted your question, have you built anything yet? If so, I'm sure I'm not the only want who would like to see and hear what you've come up with.
