5SFE is the best bang for the buck... depending on your emission laws in your area...

~135hp & ~140ftlbs of torque

Can be had motor+ tranny for 250-500$ /w only wiring and and engine mounts needing to be fabricated.

I got my 5SFE longblock for $50 in full working order.

But I was putting it into my MK2, and they bolt directly to the MK2.

I don't think it would be too much work to get a 5S to bolt to an MK1, and it definitly would be the best bang for your buck.

For bang-for-your buck, I'd definately look into the 1ZZ. These are a dime a dozen, they come out of every rental Corolla that gets crashed. You can easily find one for $400-$500. With ~130hp/~125ft.-lb., it's a little less powerful than the 5S-FE, but it's also aluminum, and has VVT-i to play with. Also, lots of people have very successfully built high boost motors on stock internals, so you know its going to last. Installation shouldn't be a whole lot harder than the 5S, and it has a 6 speed that can easily be installed if you're looking for more fun

I think Adam mentioned VVT-i, but yes, it's Toyota's valve lift mechanism. I think the corollas only have VVT-i for fuel economy though.

Could be wrong.

The 4AGZE will give you a better torque curve than any of the other engines mentioned and bolts right in but, you need all the GZE electonics for it to work correctly.
