help please...identify part.

im looking to buy a 93 n/a from a buddies older brother. it has 103k miles. it has been sitting for like 8 months. has a new head gasket and waterpump. that was the last thing done to it, it was sitting in thier relatives auto shop for like 6 months before it was worked on.

the odometer doesnt work, but he says that it's because he swapped in a 94 tranny, and didnt get the part that plugs into the transmission to count the miles i guess.....does anyone know what this sensor/plug/piece is called? where i could get it, how much it is?

also i test drove it the other day and we had to charge the battery for a while to get it to start. after we drove it around for about 15 min. we came back and sat it in the drive way and kept it on. it wasnt idling very nicely...not stalling or anything, just alittle rough...but i've heard MR2's do that. but after about 5 minutes idling i noticed the tach was dropping, and kept dropping....if i revved it it would sound very high in the rpms but it would say like 3500 and then it got to the point where the motor was idling, but the tach was at 0 rpm's. why would that happen???

It's your speed sensor. He should have just swapped the one out of the old tranny into the newer one!

You should be able to find one for ~$80US. You need to make sure that you buy the electronic model, as the cheaper, mechanical one won't work with your wiring harness.

is that the ABS speed sensor? or the engine speed sensor??

also, where does that go? on the tranny?
because i know the ABS speed sensor's go on usually two of the wheels.

vehicle speed sensor... provides the signal to the speedometer

abs sensor doesn't necessarily sense speed as far as rpms... it senses variations of signal w/ the other sensors to identify slip.

oh alright....but im confused.

how does the sensor for the speed have anything to do with the odometer? is it the same sensor?

The odometer works off the speedometer......the speedometer works off the vehicle speed sensor...if the speedometer doesn't work, the odometer will not either. I guess he didn't tell you the speedometer doesn't work either, eh?
I am looking for one for a '93, and it looks like it is going to be around $175.00, but it is a simple part to replace...if you can get to it.

The speed sensor is pretty easy to get to from under the car. Just have to reach around the crossmember.
