car on fire

My car started missing real bad and I was only I mile from home, so I headed back. At home getting out of my car I saw an orange glow. Oh F*** My car is on fire! Good thing I had a fire extinguisher in my car. I put it out right away. Man think god I put that in there. All I can see to night is the bumper got realy hot it may have cooked a little bit of the paint. The flames was comeing out of the exhaust. I pulled the plugs and the number 1 and 3 are black and wet, number 2 and 4 are light tan. Next time I'll know not to limp it home. Any idea why they what bad? It has been puffing I little blue smoke if it sits in the cold for a few days but I wouldn't that was enough to kill the plugs, I don't think thay are that old. I will try to do a compression test tomorrow. I hope my motor didn't blow up.

The compression is 155psi in all four. I changed the plugs still no good. I think at lest my motor is good. I must not be getting power to number 1 and 3 plugs. I can't see the spark by my self. Any thoughts?

So basically it was burning a lot of fuel in the exhaust?

sounds to me like you a are burning the fuel in the exhaust that is not combusting in the chambers of 1 and 3. i would check the plug wires really good to see if you have a short.

My buddy works for a company that installs fire systems in race cars I wonder how much he would charge me... The one with the bottle that mounts (normally on the passanger floor board) but I can put it in the frunk and just run the lines back. Pull a pin and lift a lever and your car is 100% extinguished.

man, the only thing i have experienced with this type of situation was one cylinder only had 5 psi of compression. you have 155 in every cylinder which makes me think that it could be the injectors or ignition. check the injectors with a multimeter to see if they are within specs (normally within 12-14 ohms). if that is ok, then check your distributor to see if there is any corrosion or loose conections.

Could it be cap and roter? Why would number one and three fail at the same time? If i floor the gas under load all four kick in at about 4500-5000 rpm. I don't have any dash lights that come on.

Ok I just checked it out and I do have spark on all four plugs. I pulled pugs two and four and the car wont run so 1 and 3 have spark and compression. It has to be fuel then right but I know I am getting gas because why would my exhaust catch on fire? Maybe there is to much gas? Right after startup gas starts to leak out of the exhaust. Please help I have all day to work on it.

If 1 and 3 are full of oil, they can be FUBAR'd and still show compression. Do a leakdown test.

You could also have a borked injector that isn't closing and blowing a steady stream of fuel into the intake plenum.

Oh man I love it when I fix something. I stated looking at the injector wires and the number one wire I saw a little steam. The wire had worn though its cover and though a ground was rubbing on it. So I am guess that the injector was static and dumping gas as fast as it could. That makes sense. I put some tape on it and once the gas cleared out its running good thanks for the help. Still not sure why that would affect the number 3 injector? Oh well. Don't care I am going gen three from PA autoracing soon anyway.

I was just going to say, 99% chance you had a faulty injector. Glad to hear you got that solved.
