I am really at a loss
I' am so f**king loss, I don't know what I should do? I' am trying to decided if i should get my 5sfe head ported for 1mm oversize vales, get a set of 244 web cams, and turbo it or should i get a 3SGE and turbo that. 3SGTE is not an option because the cheapest way to do that is to buy rear clip which i have no where to store. I really want to build my 5sfe because its already in the car right now so there no swapping needed to be done. The highest turbo 5sfe i seen was only 187WHP on a stock engine, I assume with head work, cams, build motor, and turbo i should be able to hit 250WHP. Or my other option whould be to get a 3SGE only because its the quickest and easy motor to swap in my 91, which we all know has more power under boost. than a stock 5sfe, and I hate ask you guys this but i can't find a turbo 5sfe over 200WHP anywhere.

Modding the 5S-FE to get any sort of power will be far more expensive than a turbo swap in the long run. Save up until you have the funds to do so. I'm not hating on NAs. I have several and I really like them, but they are not cost effective to mod for power.

A swap is not all that bad if you plan it out right. When you go FI, you're going to need to drop the compression so you'll end up taking the motor out of the car anyway. Boosting an engine with relatively high compression doesn't work out well reliability wise.
Since you're swap averse, a v6 doesn't sound like its in the cards, and it doesn't sound like any NA 3sge or 5sfe is going to get you where you want to go. Get a turbo clip. If you're short on funds, try to piece the stuff you need together. |

Most people are selling just the 3sgte engines and tranny together without the clip. Some are going for as low as $800 + shipping. Of course these are most likely USDM, but that's faster than an NA can get you for that kind of money.

^ the only usdm 3sge is the really crappy celica one. your run of the mill 5sfe makes more power and torque than those turds. all the mr2-based 3sge's will be imports, most likely from japan.
building a 4 cylinder is not cheap, period. |

true, I just didnt want to discourage the guy, but turbo applications are easier/cheaper to get power than a standard 4 banger. I only say depending on your goals becuase a slap and tune turbo kit may run you like 1200 - 1500 thats just the turbo, manifold and various little bits if you install yourself at low boost, no build.

How about a 3S-GE build to turbo, trust me guys i want a 3sgte but i don't have any where to store a clip, and if i buy it piece by piece it will be to expensive. I figure hey a 3sge with ecu and harness is a grand shipped, its swap i my SW21 with no body harness needed or extra sensor than my 5S-FE has. i can get 3S-GTE forged pistons and rods for about 800 dollars.

When you finally do go turbo, you'll need 3sgte:
-intake manifold -exhaust manifold -injectors -ecu -afm -wiring harness -intercooler In addition to the pistons. About the only thing the 3sge and 3sgte have totally in common are the rods, crank, head, and block. And I do believe you might have to tap the 3sge block for an oil cooler line or something like that. You'd be better off just dropping the 3sge back out of the car and selling it at that point. If you want a 3sgte, buy a 3sgte. |
