Question Alternator question

Are the alternators from other 5SFE engines the same as the one on an MR2? Mine went to **** and I wanted to know if I could snag one from a local junkyard. Thanks

I believe they are, although there are 2 or 3 different amp ratings / cases so make sure you get the right one. I would just take your old one in the yard with you if they allow it.

Is the amperage labeled, or is it the design of the alternator?

There is a part number on the alternator which you should be able to use to find out what the correct amperage is, I suppose that would also be on the junkyard alternator to compare with as well.

You can't use a larger or smaller alternator, has to be the correct size. You could probably go with the larger one if you wanted but you would need the bracket for it as well in order for it to line up right.

best bet is to just get one at autozone or ect.
at least you know it will work and lifetime coverage

I think the best is to rebuild the one you have. usually cost about $100. then you will know for sure it's the right one and it's going to last you for wile. Usually shops can rebuild them in one day. so you won't have your car for about 2 days because it's pretty hard to take it out. Well that is my opinion.

.. or you could pay a little bit more and get a lifetime warranty on a new alternator.

if you do it yourself you can save a little bit of money, but still have no warranty.

it should take you more like 2 hours, not 2 days.

If you have power steering, you have to stick with the 100 amp or you'll start popping your relay/solinoid up front and that can cost more than the alt.
