New Guy: RPM/80mph and Temp Needle Moving

Hey guys, new owner here. Got a red 91 hardtop to drive now...traded my Maxima for it, which in turn I traded my Galant VR4 for it cause I couldn't take all the oil leaks and breaking down. I remember sitting in a SW20 in the showroom when I was like 14, and thinking that I'd never have one.

My first question to you guys is this:

In 5th gear going 80mph, does the rpm does the motor turn?

And, do these cars have cooling issues or problems with the temperature sensors? My temp gauge needle keeps moving sometimes...it settled down since I replaced the radiator cap. But when the needle moved, it moved very quickly and all the way up to the red. But when I shut it down, and turned the igntion on, the needle would go back down some. Gonna check into it today since I finally got a free day. Any input would help

This seems like a forum where you guys are pretty cool. No real bashing and foul mouth. I've seen some nonsense before- glad to be here.

Nice. Hardtop Turbo MR2s are in the minority so they are worth a little bit more and weigh a little bit less all else being equal.

In fifth gear at 80mph your tach should be right around the 3500 mark.

The temp sensor on these cars is much more likely to go than the gauge itself. It's the single wire sensor on the coolant outlet neck closest to the distributor. You don't even need to drain the coolant to replace it. Only a little bit will leak out during the procedure (if you are fast) and you can just add some back in to make up for it.

wrong section ricky, this is the na section

at 80, you'll be at about 4K.. the turbo is geared lower. the temp sender is cheap new. make sure your wire isnt shorting out or anything.

He said he had an SW20. That's a turbo chassis. Maybe he is mistaken and has an SW21 NA (No Acceleration, Naturaly Aspires to want turbocharging, Not All that fast, whatever NA means.... )

You're right Ricky- I was mistaken...I do have a 21. Thanks for the correction though.
