How will an engine number tell you how many miles are on a motor?

The engine code is on the upper tbelt cover. They all say, "3S-GTE" on it. There are a couple of places where a VIN plate should be. I don't recally where it was on the engine (or if there is one at all) but there should be one on the tranny. With the VIN, try and run a car fax and see what the mileage they have for it for their last date.

The engine number is very difficult to see in the car. The number itself won't be helpful as it is not used by the dealer to reference anything about the motor. Your best bet is the VIN, but even that is not helpful if the car does not have the original motor.

This is where, who you know is the best asset. Is it a clip ?
If its a whole car get the VIN, In Australia with the VIN you can find the last registered owner of the vehicle and get them to contact the owner and give them your details. Have done this in the past only to find the dealer has rolled the KMS. If its a clip or engine only , hard unless you want to put the time in it. Most likely it was serviced by toyota when new, they record the vin and engine number, but **** thats hard if it didn't come from your state. I located my info because l have very close Japanese friends , in the know. Unfortunately l bought before l did the check. Good luck and l hope you dont get gibbed ! |
