Question Newby in need of some guidance...

Hello all,

My name is Randal and I am going to look at an 92 MR-2 (N/A) in about an hour (7:30pm CST)...
I wanted to know if this car is comparable or better than an 89 RX-7 (N/A), performance wise...
What kind of gas mileage can I expect (ballpark of course)...
Are there any pitfalls to look out for when checking this car out...
Any other advice woul be greatly appreciated...

Sorry for the all of the smileys... I could not resist...

1. Yes in terms of handling, no in terms of acceleration, so it depends what you go for
2. Decent, anywhere from 20-30mpg depending on how you drive
3. MAKE SURE EVERYTHING WORKS. Aside from that, make sure it's not rusty and will pass state inspection. My new '91 is having A LOT of trouble passing smog.
4. Um... Have fun? You will probably (if the car is OK) be unable to see yourself ever driving anything but an MR2 ever again.
Hope that helps.

I doubt that the RX-7 will beat it in acceleration... It is great on top end but has terrible acceleration... Thanks for the quick reply...

The MR2 should have a lot better acceleration than the RX7 as rotaries have no
torque at all. Great handling is one of the best qualities of the RX7. I have yet to drive an 2nd gen MR2 con a curvy road, but it should be just as good or better with a competent driver who understand midengine dynamics. As a former
RX7 owner, I can say that the car is very enjoyable to drive, specially when going over 100 mph at high RPM's and on curvy roads, but I have to warn you that RX7's are very high maintenance cars, so you better be ready to put lots of money into it to keep it running.

My Google Map

i have both an 89 rx7 (n/a) (currently undergoing a blown 350 sbc swap) and a 94 mr2 (n/a). when the rx7 was under good ole rotary power, it had some decent get up and go and some good top end. my mr2 currently has an intake and a straight pipe 2.75 in exhaust including headers. i would put my 2 up against the 7 any day as long as it was just a 0-60 or even 0-100 but after that, the 7 would take it. my mr2 tops out at just shy of 125. i had my 7 at 156 once. (believe it or not its true, i have a witness) as far as the joyness of driving and the sheer feeling you get when taking a corner that would cause most people over 40 to have a heart attack, nothing compares. (at least not that ive ever driven) but it all comes down to you, drive the car, push it a LITTLE if he will let you, see how you feel in it. if you like it, its worth it, if you dont, to each there own. hope this helps. oh and as far as gas mileage, i get anywhere from 24-30 depending on how im driving.

Well...now. I think I may be of some assistance. I have this, It gets 14-17 mpg and I drive it maybe once a week on the weekends.

I also have this, 29-34MPG, handles just as good and I drive it all the time.

I absolutely love my MR2. I wish I would have never bought that darn 2005 corolla as a daily driver a year and a half ago when I realized my RX-8 would not be an economical daily driver.

I got it... I love it already... 10 minutes after having it, it died... Bad battery or alternator... A guy drove by and asked if something was wrong with my "2"... I knew he had to be an owner of one himself... He left and came back 15 minutes later in his MR2... Turns out he has several...He rebuilds them to sell... Mine got towed home and is now in the garage... Is it possible that it is already jealous of the 7?

By the way... I am not making this up... I swear...
