Hello, I know this thread has moved away from the 'how to take the valve cover off' bit, but as that was it's title, I'll try asking here.
I was going to check my valve clearances because I hear a tapping when accelerating (I can describe more in a bit) but I am stuck with a simple problem- the metal piece running between the two valve covers. I can't pull it off because the timing belt cover/other plastic there is blocking it from coming off. Do I need to take off the timing belt cover? Short description of my problem: tapping noise that is directly tied to engine speed, only shows up when accelerating. If I listen very hard when the windows are closed at night, I can hear a 'whirrrr' develop into the tapping as I accelerate. I'm pretty sure it's not knocking, because it sounds nothing like the descriptions I've heard, and timing is set right (also my neighbor, who is a mechanic, has heard it and says it's not knocking). The neighbor thinks it's a fan or something that shifts when I accelerate, so I'm considering disconnecting A/C pump and/or alternator for testing purposes (the battery should have enough charge for a minute or two driving without alternator, right?) and I've already checked the fan on the intake scoop, but I am continually suspicious of the valves. Although, at 1k rpm I figure that each valve is opening at about 8 times per second (16 rotations per second, and each pair of valves opens every other rotation) and it seems like it goes slower than that. I can't be sure, but while it's multiple taps per second, I'd have to count it to really know. I think it started to blend together at about 4k rpm, up till there you can hear distinct tapping So, like I said- a short description! ![]() Oh a few more reasons why I don't think it's knocking- spark plugs are pretty new, dizzy cap and rotor have whitened tips but still look good, gas is right octane. And the mechanical sound of it all, and how it is DIRECTLY tied to engine speed, and smooth. Not unpredictable. |
