Can a 5SFE block be bored out?

I have rebuilt 4cyl engines before, but none requiring the cylinders to be bored out. I was told by my favorite machine shop that it's not possible with either 5- or the 3- MR2 blocks b/c the coolant jackets are too close to the cylinder walls.

He surmised this only because he could not locate piston or rod part#'s for these particular applications. I suppose you could do everything but that (which is what I've done in the past)

I'm just curious b/c I always like to have a spare engine on my project cars to mess with

Thanks for the help!

He is a little oldschool, but like I said his supposition was because his catalog did not contain replacement rods, pistons for these particular motors. He just sort of tilted his head to the side when I started talking about an engine that wasn't a 302, 305, or 350ci.

you can buy oversized pistons and rings from toyota themselves, you can certainly bore them out, its even recommended in the BGB.. of course its only a repair bore, you cant punch them out for a real displacement gain.

The 5S is already bored out 1mm over the 3S from the factory. The 2AZ runs a 1.2mm larger bore over the 5S and about 5mm more stroke to achieve only 0.2L of displacement with a completely new engine cast.

O/S pistons and bearings are usually for repair purposes only.

I meant for repair purposes; I probably should have made that clear.

Thanks for the help!
