Don't all cars idle high when cold. They run rich on purpose until the o2 sensor is at the right temparature to start sending reliable signals? Once the o2 sensor is sending correct signals to the ecu then the idle and fueling mixture control is returned back to the o2/ecu. Isn't that why the exhaust is significantly more "gassy" smelling when warming up?
I would start by replacing or at least testing your o2 sensor. Those things are supposed to be changed every 60k or something... it's probably never been replaced. |

neither my moms newer volvo (it's new so that's prob why) or my older car (which shall remain nameless
) idle high at start up. Sticks at 1K exactly after the initial turning over of the engine.Could be a european thing...lol |

I guess... My 2007 FJ and my fiance's 2006 Jeep Liberty.. does it too. Maybe they have a different type of O2 sensor that is probably 10x as much as a standard one? LOL

Mine was a problem with the throttle body/ butterfly plate not mating up. After roughly 210,000 miles, dirt grime, eventually got through air filter, into the throttle body. It wore out the inside of the throttle body on one side of the butterfly plate. If you take it off, you should not be able to see a gap between the plate and the inside wall of the t.b. Mine was pretty good sized gap. I sent it to Maxbore and got it ported and polished, as well as having the butterfly plate replaced with a beefy one. costs 140.00 through paypal, takes a little more than a week. Good deal. Following this repair I drove my car 830 miles to houston tx and then back to atl, and from there went another 750+ each way to the Outer Banks North Carolina... Car ran great and has better top end acceleration now for sure.
