92' n/a HIGH IDLE????
Im new to the mr2 community and i recently bought a '92 n/a(5sfe)5speed: $1900 w/ 128k miles. everything seemed ok, except for the High Idle and other cosmetic blems. i was wondering if anyone has any advice on this and if this is a serious problem (serious as in i should stop driving it temporarily until its fixed?)

Welcome. So what is your idling speed?

Is your car in good condition (what sort of cosmetic blemishes?). I'm looking to buy a 91 N/a but for $5,500!! But back on topic, the high idle shouldnt be too serious,...how high is it though?

when i just start it up, its around 2k but it drops anywhere in between 1500-2000. and when i let it idle for a little, it starts to drop to around 1300 but then shoots back up. its like it "bounces" around.

oh and the car is in "ok" condition. SALVAGE is the problem.... and the reason for the cheap price. other than the idle problem, it seemed to be good. the damage was in the front of the car.

ah I see, ....my honda does that, it's an O2 sensor but I forget which one it is, it could also be a number of things maf, ecu, etc...but thats experience from other cars, not mr2's

you can try and adjust the idle. at the top of the intake manifold there is a flat head screw you can turn to adjust it. it is pluged by a round black cover sitting on top of the intake manifold. or check your spark plugs. and like they say check your o2 sensor.

BGB = Big Green Book. The factory service manual. There is a copy of it online. I'd give you the link but I'm firewalled away from it right now.
This is a really common issue with the 5sfe and if you do a little digging you will find more information than you can shake a stick at. Adjusting your idle screw might bring your idle down a little but the issue is almost always air getting in where it's not supposed to. This can be from a variety of places: 1. Vacuum port open or damaged vacuum line. 2. Problem with your ISCV (Idle Speed Control Valve, in the throttle body) 3. Butterfly plate in the throttle body not mating well anymore. 4. Throttle stop or idle screw maladjusted. That works for a start and there are ways to check each issue. Something else that is a possiblity, but less likely, is that your timing is advanced a little.

ill see what i can do about getting a sticky put together. theres unfortunately a lot of little things that can make it high idle, and its almost always a nightmare to fully fix.

My 5sfe idles as high as 1.5k on first start, but then slowly makes its way down to 750 rpm. Is this the same for all of you, or do I have some adjusting to do?

on first start im sure that is normal since its still cold. mine is the same. but mine is almost at 1.5 at first start, maybe coz i have straight flow exhaust. and then it will go down. mine is not exactly at 750 though, the needle is a little bit on top of it. so im guessing its around 800-900 or so.

some cars have a quick warm up built into them (i think it was originally designed to warm up turbo?) but my bro's old rx7 did it for a little bit, but you could stop it be putting it in drive or hitting gas (it was an auto). I forget though, and I could be completely wrong

all cars high idle when they're cold. if your car didnt, you'd have some serious problems.
if your car idles under 1K rpm, i really really suggest you dont worry about it, thats perfectly within spec. |

My Dos also idles around 1,300-1,500. I replaced the EGR valve and it actually lowered it from the original 1,500 to 1,300. That idle screw on the throttle is as tight as can be. But, I wouldn't worry about it. Who cares? It really doesn't make a difference to me, since I have been driving it like that for 2 years. And I might mention I deliver pizzas! So take it from me, unless you are super anal retentive, don't worry about it.
