exhaust question
Well, I'm running the 3S head on a 5SFE block (I think, it's how I bought it). I'm just looking for a stock exhaust replacement. It has stock dual exhaust system, but there's an exhaust leak somewhere. I'm going to check it out tomorrow and see if I can just fill in that exhaust leak for now but I just wanted to know which header/b-pipe/etc. to use if I were to buy a new one. I don't want anything loud, so most aftermarket systems are out of the picture.

I'ld like to see a pictures of that engine, head, and the headers if you can. That will make it easier to detemine what you have going on there. An under shot would be great too. The 5s block with the 3s head is something I've been discussing in another thread. It's called a 5sge hybrid.... if you really have this setup. I'ld like to know more.
The 5SGE, 5S-GE fable Anyway, the exhaust all depends on what header you have on there. The 5sfe, 3sge, and 3sgte exhaust mani's all mate up.... However they all have a different exit location, I think. so, that will determine the B-pipe. |

I'll try to post up some pictures soon. I only got a camera phone so I will have to borrow my dad's or someone's to get a good picture.
But yea, I read up a little on it. I don't know who did it and what all they did. The guy I bought it from wasn't FULLY aware of what happened. I may have to call the dealership he bought it from to get more information. Don't even know if they changed pistons, etc. |

That's strange... it must have a piggy back or stand alone ems. Pull back the carpet from the firewall in the trunk and take a look. If there is a box with wires other than the toyota silver ecu, then i would believe it. I don't think this thing would run very good otherwise.

If I could open the trunk, lol. I made another thread because my trunk won't open. It turned sideways and is stuck. It might be a while for me to get to it.

most people who have the 5sge hybrid are fairly proud of them.. if someone sold you one, 99.9% chance they'd know exactly what it was. maybe you got a 3sfe instead?

Oh... that's a problem. LOL Or maybe they swapped out the 5sfe and you have a 3sge? Anyway, pics will be worth a thousand words.

I'll borrow a camera tomorrow. I doubt it's a 3sge. The head has those markings to let you know it was from a junkyard or something. So it's been replaced. I want to call the dealership that did this but it's long distance. I'll try throughout the week and keep you guys updated.
Either way, I'm just going to find an exhaust and slap it on. If it doesn't work, I'll just resell it. |

Well, still no digital camera in my hands. I'll do it tomorrow (procrastination) with my super crappy camera phone and take the pics out in the sun. BUT I did check my ecu and it was stamped "5S-FE", with the factory Toyota symbol on it (obviously factory ecu).
If it truly is a 3S head, I may be tempted to find a turbo and slap it on.. otherwise I'd opt out for a swap ( it'll be a newer engine as well). If I can make a decent video as well, it runs fairly well. Made it from Florida to Chattanooga easily. |

If you have a 3s head... you won't be running on the 5sfe ecu. So, I hate to tell you this, but you're probably running a plain ol' 5sfe.
Does your throttle body point north, towards the front of your car? It will be hovering over your plug wires near the center of your engine bay. Or is your tb in the rear of the engine bay pointing towards the driverside and fuse box? |

I don't know... I don't think someone will slap on the same head and put a 2.0 sticker on it. Again, the guy I bought it from said the head was replaced with a 2.0 head, in which, the dealer he bought it from informed him.
But here's a couple of pictures. Again, sorry for the bad quality, I currently only have access to my camera phone. I'll get a video of it running later on. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

That's definitely not the 3sge head... It's a 3sfe head. The valve cover and the intake are definitely not 3sge ... I'm almost 100% sure that is the 3sfe?
So basically you have a 5sfe 2.2 block with a 3sfe 2.0 head? I don't think there is much difference in heads between those 2 engines. The 5sfe block just has more stroke and larger displacement. You're gonna have to be careful if you have to get a distributor, cap, rotors, plugs, etc.... you'll need to make sure it's either 3sfe or 5sfe/3sfe compatible. Just to clarify. The FE and GE determines the head design. FE = narrow angle and GE = wide angle. It's more complicated then that... but, that's the major difference. |

You are right! I completely ruled out the 3sfe head.. forgot about that. Thanks for clearing it up for me. I didn't even think about that head...

no prob... and to answer your original question, you can use any 5sfe header and exhaust. There are other options... but if you don't want aftermarket and noise... then they are not what you want.
