Oil Cooler?

I recently acquired a used 5sfe to get my 2 up and running again....going about the business of replacing various things I might want to replace while its out and in front of me. I noticed something that was interesting, NO OIL COOLER! Also the water bypass pipe had the tubing rerouted to bypass the removed oil cooler. What came off my motor had the tubing in the correct positions, I know this b/c I still have the the assembly. My question is why in the world would any one take that off? Is it needed? All that I can see in the BGB is that every engine down to the 3sfe had an oil cooler on the block. I have poked around on line and found references to only auto's having this buy mine had it and I didnt have an auto....

The oil cooler is important in high stress situations. It helps stabilize the oil temperatures. Since it's a used 5SFE, someone might have taken the oil cooler assembly. If the block has the oil cooler stud on it, then it was designed to have an oil cooler on it. A lot of 5SFE blocks weren't drilled and tapped for the oil cooler stud because it's an optional component. I believe it came in a package for new cars.

Use your oil cooler assembly if you want cooler oil temps.

I can by pass the hoses that were going to the Oil Cooler back up to the water bypass pipe, I really just dont want to not have something that really should be there, its an 108 dollar part new...If its not overly needed then I will hold off for now. The motor was running seemingly fine without it, but mine had one before it blew...

The motor blew just to the right of the cooler, damaging it...Also I got rid of the old motor before I got a new one. Note to self, dont do that again, there are a handful of random things wrong with the one I bought so I wish I stll had the old one to pick apart...

Yes there are 2 small hoses that feed into and return to the water bypass pipe (metal pipe running from the water pump across the block) there is also an additional valve that screws into the cooler also allowing the filter to screw on. I will post pics of mine...(or lack there of

Thanks for the offer, I finally got to the local pull apart and picked one off another block for 5 bucks...I would have had I not already gotten one. Yeah its the only thing with two tubes you have the right part...it has a rather large nut holding it and the bypass valve in place...
