I had a header on my car when it was n/a, and it made so much extra noise. I absolutly hated it, HATED it, oh ya I HATED IT.

The header sounds great with the factory muff...the exhaust is what made it sooooo loud

well I found out today that it wasn't the exhaust that made it loud. I installed ssautos new 4-2-1 header and wow what a difference in sound. It is half as loud as the 4-1 header. No where near the back pressure either. I should have some new dyno numbers for the header next week.

Any updates? What are the sizes of the tubing, both primary and secondary?

I like my ssautochrome 4-1 header + downpipe + no cat, with stock muffler. Nice sound, happy customer.
91 NA 5sfe I noticed some increase in power, and it looks nice. Plus; Easy access to the oil filter. A/C is not so much of a strain on the engine. I picked it up off ebay for 125$ shipped a few months ago. |

Love the equal 4-2-1 header from ssauto. I haven't had time to dyno yet but at 4,000rpm it's like a whole new cam kicking in. Not as loud as the 4-1 design, must less back pressure though.
Come see it at the meet: http://www.mr2board.com/forums/gener...rag-event.html |

Pardon, but I'm a bit confused. You say your current ssauto header is a 4-2-1 design, but the pics you have linked in post #32 above appear to be 4-1. Even more confusing, the pics you have linked in post #26 above, the one that you said you removed, appear to be a 4-2-1 design.
Which one of these do you have installed now, and what is the source for each one? All I can find on SSAutoChrome's web site (http://i3.tinypic.com/161nurb.jpg) is their 4-1 header; the photographs (both their stock photo and your photos) confirm it is actually 4-1. I'd also still like to find out the tubing sizes for this header, both the primary (at the head) and seconday (after the collector). I emailed SSAutoChrome, but they just referred me to an eBay listing (#150037529258, also a 4-1 design) that says 1.75" without specifying which tube that is... Any assistance is sincerely appreciated. - Greg |

1.75 primaries, with a 2.5 collector.. i have no clue what the 4-2-1 is. im SURE its not ideal.. but for the 90 bucks they're selling for, its a hell of a deal, and still tons better than stock. i think one guy actually thought it out and made himself a proper header..

I have had no problems with their header or dealing with ssauto.
The pirctures posted are the old header here is the new one. I will e-mail them about the new design cost. They were waiting for me to finish having the fab work done for the b-pipe to connect to their dual 3" exhaust. They did not make the header some other company just came out with it and I am not sure of their name. Becuase of having an after market exhaust I had to have an O2 sensor fabed for it. If you have the factory exhaust, the supplied b-pipe has the O2 sensor on it. The last pic is what all was included in the box when it arrived. All the tubing is 1.75 and bolts directly up to the factory exhaust. Hopefully I can get some dyno numbers in the next week or two. Life's busy right now. Thanks, TRD. So SSAuto is coming out with this new design? Any idea of expected price or ETA?
Could you recheck that outlet pipe diameter? It looks larger than the ones coming off the head... - GA |

I am e-mailing them as we speak. I believe it's already out. They just started carring it for another maker and I was the tester. They are waiting for the dyno numbers that I have not been able to get yet becuase of being so busy. I'll post again when they reply

Is it just me or is that Manifold flange paper thin on the new header?
Edit: Nevermind, I see what's going on. ![]()

If you're doing an NA>T swap, you might want to get a clip instead of just the motor. You need the axles, tranny, and motor. An uncut harness will help a lot too.
If you are going for drift, I'd get a Gen3. I say that for everyone, but yeah, the Gen3 comes on smooth with the power, so it wont kick the back end out so fast you can't control it. It gives much better power control. I drifted my Gen3 just a few times when my back tires were dying, but it was very easy to control with the throttle. |

It looks to me that the new design incorparated mounting points for the stock heat shields, is this correct?

Yes it does have mounts for the heat shield. I never got to try them out as the old ones were rusted to the stock manifold when it was removed. I had to cut away the cover just to get top all the stock bolts. I am going to have a custom stainless made later one and have it stamped with TRD-CEO or something.
Mister, the flange is thinner than the huge 4-1 one but I haven't had nay issue with it yet. It's been on for about a month now and all is fine. |

SS Auto said the 4-2-1 were going for $275. Let me know if you need one and I'll have them e-mail you directly

Flipsta, I bought that one for a current project I'm working on. For $133 (shipped) it's not a bad piece. Just bid $99 or $100 on all of the ones they sell - and they sell scores of them per month - and you'll eventually get a hit on one. Trust me; it took me all of 1 week to get it for $99...
There's some things I'd change on it; for example the exit flange (the one that bolts to the stock muffler) is WAY smaller than the tubing it welds to (like, maybe 3/8 to 1/2 inch smaller ID). If you want to do it right, you'll take the time to open that up, otherwise it'll kill your air flow. The tubing sizes are probably about right for the RPM range the 5SFE runs in. Overall workmanship and quality is reasonable; I can find no obvious flaws with it. Plus, it's about 15-20 pounds lighter than the factory exhaust manifold/cat. For full-up racing (which is what my project is) I'd probably change the design slightly, but for the price you can't beat it. - GA |
