my mr2 smells gas inside the car

so this is what happened. i was driving in the morning going to school. the engine was cold so my idle is a little past 1500 rpm. and when i stopped on the street light i started to smell gasoline and all my windows are shut. for the first 2-3 seconds i kinda ignore it maybe its the car right next to me. but when i started running a few feet it just got worse so i roll down my windows to let the smell out and i saw a huge drop on my gas gauge maybe 2-5 indicator lines.

has this ever happpened to any of you guys?

Do not drive the car without finding the source. You have a fuel leak. Vapor is explosive. Liquid merely incendiary. (ha ha) It sounds serious if your gauge is dropping that fast.

Totally agreed.

Do not drive the car until you get this fixed.

It should be easy to find. Do you have a set of jack stands and a floor jack?

I highly suggest you jack it up and take a look. I would remove the underside panels along the bottom side of the car to expose the fuel tank. If you have a cracked tank or a leak along the fuel lines (run along the top of the tank) then you should see evidence there.

Once you have checked that out, the next major spot is where the fuel lines cross through the firewall on their way to the fuel filter. From there it is easy to trace out and check for leaks.

There is a way to jumper the diag port with a paper clip so that the fuel pump will run w/o the motor starting. You could do that just to put pressure on the system if needed.

More than likely...if you start the car...run it for a couple of mins and then check for leaks along the lines you will spot the problem rather quickly.

Good luck. I would hate to see you get hurt in a car fire...and/or you loose your deuce to a fire that could have been prevented.
