5SFE or 3SGE?

I bought a new 91 MR2. When it was Carfaxed, it stated 2.2L meaning it was 5SFE as stock. But the owner said the previous owner changed the engine (i was told it was a used engine). Is there a distinctive way to check what kind of engine it has currently? if its a 5SFE, 3SGE, gen 1 2 or 3?

And also, the AC blows air, but it is not cold at all. The owner said there is no AC, which he doesn't know how to explain either. is there a way to check if the entire AC system is missing, or it needs coolant etc?

it's missing the engine hood...

and in the 5SFE engine pic, can u tell me where the AC is?

meaning it has no protective cover on the engine so its hard to tell by that picture... both engine look similar without the protective covers.
