Tune up magic?

In the last 3 months I realized I was developing a problem when shifting hard. When I drove the car hard and shifted at higher RPM's, after each shift the engine felt like it was hanging and the RPM's stayed still before the dropped. For example I'd run it up to 5000 RPM in first and shift in to second, but after I shifted it would take about .5 to 1 second for the RPM's to drop and my foot has already left the clutch and hit the gas.

I was going to spend some time trying to figure this out last week but realized I've NEVER done a tune up on this car in the 2 1/2 years I've had it, so figured let me do that before I do anything else.

I got OEM Toyota parts for the tune up and 30 minutes later after the UPS man dropped them off they were in. I took a run to the store and took a back road to drive it a little hard and...magically the problem is GONE.

Is that possible a simple tune up cured that?

Your problem sounds like a slipping clutch to me...In which case the tune up wouldn't directly solve it.

Well, i drove it several times since the tune up and the problem is no longer there. Keep in mind this only happened at the higher RPM range, and during everyday normal driving all was fine.

Still sounds like a slipping clutch...it will eventually get to the point where it will slip during normal driving (assuming that's the problem). When shifting quickly and getting on the throttle harder will cause the clutch to slip as the friction material is worn to the point where it can't transfer the high power out put to the transmission fast enough. Next time you rev it really high...try not shifting fast and give it a little time after the shift to get on the gas. See if it still does what you describe.

^ What he said.

Your tune up had nothing to do with it.

Are you prone to dropping the clutch sometimes?

If your clutch disc was a little glazed then you might have been able to break up the glaze by driving it.

Would a slipping clutch account for my MR2 not grabbing in first gear
(I put it in first, let go of the clutch until it starts moving and put gas but when I put gas it won't move for at least 20 seconds unless I give it more gas then it should be using)

and how would I go about fixing this? bleed the clutch fluid? replace the clutch? help me out

Yes, it sounds like your clutch is slipping. The only fix for this is to replace the clutch/pressure plate.

Whenever you replace the clutch you also want to check out the flywheel and the throw-out bearing to see if they need to be replaced also. If you have to pull the flywheel for resurfacing or replacement it's a good idea to consider replacing your rear main seal.

Clutch lines needing to be bled and master/slave cylinders failing won't result in a car that won't move directly. What you see there is really light clutch pedal pressure and or not being able to put the car into gear.
