A/C recharge

1. How much at the dealership? or at a decent shop?
2. R134 or the industrial stuff( ES-12a, recommended by V6'er)?

Dealership is usually around $150 for R-134.

An A/C recharge is an A/C recharge, it doesn't really matter where. If you are R12, keep it R12.

r12 sucks.. its such a hassle. i have refrigerant license and i dont even use it. if you ever have to service it (and you probably will, multiple times), you're kinda SOL. if its r134 you just drag yourself down to any parts store/walmart/gas station/supermarket/hardware store and get a can and you're on your way with cold air again.

it seems like damn near 9/10 people lose their first charge to leaks they didnt find the first time. id rather lose a 20 dollar charge of r134a than a 100 dollar charge of r12. id very stongly suggest you pump a can of r134a and leak dye into your car before paying a shop to recharge.

ES12a is compatible with r134a, so sure why not. it does work better.

If the compressor is shot, then how much are we talking about? Keep in mind, I don't do most labor. I'm looking at a 91 N/A, that may need some help.

I just spent $1,100 on a new denso compressor, fittings, R12, condensor ... pretty much an entirely new AC system.

If I put the fan switch on the second or third position I get frostbite on my toes....

Really? R12 doesn't leak as much as R134a and I think it blows colder.....

Apparently the recharge is expensive, by comparison. As for the leaking less... Please.

Josh at Chico said it's a pain in the (bleep).
Here in Memphis, I can't imagine that the few degrees difference would be that noticeable.
I will stick with the basic stuff.

nah, hes right. it definitely leaks less. r134a can leak straight out of a hose that otherwise wouldnt have leaked r12.. r12 does work better, but it gets over 100 here and i havent had issues with r134.. cooler is always better, but the hassle of r12 isnt worth the benefit of a little colder air when mines already too cold on full blast. but the leaking is a valid point.

but with an old car, usually all the r12 leaked out because something was worn out anyway. if you paid a bunch to recharge, theres a pretty good chance your fresh charge would just leak out again too.. you can just replace everything and pray you didnt miss anything at all and recharge, or use r134a and not really worry about it.

ac work is really expensive.. when you try to add in r12 it gets even more expensive and a bigger hassle and less availability.
