Strange Sound
whenever my car is cold and i start it, it makes this really really fast knocking sound and it only lasts for literally one second and then it goes away. it won't do it for the rest of the day. usually just when i haven't driven it within several hours. could this have something to do with oil or some kind of oil issue?

cold start knock.. its pretty normal, its just the oil getting to your engine.
unless you're running a fram filter.. then thats the sound of your engine being damaged. |

all cars do it, you just hear it less on some. the mr2 engine isnt well insulated at all, and older toyota engines were built pretty loose (more noise).
the noise should coincide with the oil light turning off.. as long as that light keeps turning off quickly, you're in good shape! |

yesterday i got in to start it and the knock was REALLY loud and a lot more violent than usual... but i haven't started the car in a day or so and it has been pretty cold outside. it was the first time i have ever heard it that loud. but the knock went away in a couple of seconds. could that more violent knock have been caused by it being cold for an extended amount of time and that it hasn't been started in a day??

I've had the same problem the past few weeks even since I got back from my road trip. It started out as a minor vibration and its escalated to a hard knock and it takes a few turns to get it started. She runs fine once she's warmed up, and it feels like theirs a little more power driving it now SO i'm guessing the timing is advanced too far.
I'm at 112K miles with almost original everything, so I know my belts are over due. She was running so great the past 60k..no problems what so ever. |
