please dont tell people to search.
this helps all of us.
if you dont know the answer, dont post and tell someone to search.. or dont post at all. or search yourself and post up relevant results. or just click back and go about your day. just dont post "search no0b". what happens is people do end up searching, and get a bunch of worthless posts telling them to search.. which makes them just go ahead and post threads causing even more compounding clutter and an even less effective search feature. so yeah, you posting to search is much worse than some new guy asking the same question. if you're new.. give the search function a try, theres tons of great info here. if you cant find it, post up your question. thats what the board is here for.. but its a group effort to ensure the search function remains useful. the search-nazi game ruins it for us all. |

But just think of the adventure. Things discovered along the way. The magic of blundering onto exactly what you need.

So.....I detect some frustration there Tom, maybe you outta start a new thread ie: Hey Noobie before you ask why dont you read this. You could post helpful hints there like: How to ask a question and not look stupid or Where you should look before you post or Read the Stickies or If you don't know what you're doing put down the tools.
I think the asking question is fine, just don't ask questions like " My car does this thing and I need someone to tell me what to change to fix it." Which generally is an open door for every suggestion in the world. I found myself reading this the other day and it made me wonder if anyone bothers to read it.Basic DIY diagnostics...let's begin.. Lots of good stuff there. Heh. |

every now and then i do post a tech article
its not just for newbies, everyone runs into a problem somewhere and needs a quick answer.. most people search to find it, and a lot of times the answers might come from a rehashed thread. it helps keep information available and easily accessible to not have EVERY thread just say "search". |

strangely i haven't seem too many people saying just to search on this forum, it's definitely not as bad as others.
On another forum i was having issues with a printer and i made a thread and some user posted a rude comment saying to search and something about nobody searching, so i did another search and all the threads i pulled up had the same guy telling everyone to search, and none of the ones i pulled up gave me the answer, cause that ass hole killed each thread with his comment telling people to search, instead of helping people out |

Go do a search on searching Tom, and I want you to search through search results of that thread while youre searching for answers to your questions.
The search is there for a reason. Use it. haha |

I've never used the search. Should I search for the search to search the search function? Maybe I should just wait for Tom to search first. How accurate is the search anyways if i really need to use it. Since people are telling other people to search using the search I'd like to know how well the search will search.

I have mixed feelings about this. A lot of the time when people are told to search it's because it is easy to find like "What springs are good?" or "How do I make 300 hp?" and "Why doesn't anyone turbo the 5sfe?". Those kind of questions really are easy to find answers to so asking someone to search generally isn't a bad idea. For the more obscure topics it is pointless to tell people to search because of that reason. I've run into the frustration of finding lots of threads just telling people to search. You can usually weed those out by the number of responses.
Sorry if I upset you Tom in a thread by telling someone to search regarding headers for the NA. |

Problem is if everyone did a search, you wouldnt have new topics and stuff to talk about, so the usefulness of the messageboard turns into a data archive.
Thats my only beef with telling someone to search. If someone asks a question, and you know the answer to it, just answer the damn question. If the question requires more than you can answer, give the correct search terms, or even perform the search for the person, and then link to the search results. Thats what I do generally. |

im not upset. its the internet, i dont really get upset
the truth is, we could just close the board down because every question has been answered, every part has been reviewed, every idea has pretty much been tried, etc etc.. we could make the whole place just an article archive and info could be found.. thats not the point of online communities though. plus the same question rarely gets the same answers in different threads.. also many questions spiral off into discussion about related but different things. it makes each thread unique and useful. if we just replied "SEARCH!!1" to every reposted thread, when someone actually did search, and finally found a thread with info in it besides just "search" comments, they'd get half the story, or biased opinions, or just plain bad info. theres nothing wrong with covering the same thing twice.. or three times, or a hundred times even. its been 19 years since the mk2's introduction, we've been over everything a hundred times by now ![]() plus theres the other thing.. this isnt a one-on-one question and answer kinda thing. one person asking a question for themselves might indirectly benefit 10 other people who read it.. many of them who find that question through a search. nothing is worse than actually searching like you're supposed to, and being told to search. so in short, telling someone to search is absolutely useless. duplicate threads provide info. like luni said, if you know the answer, just post it. if you dont, click back. |

Hey tom can you tell me where my battery is? Or how to open the rear hood? What cheap fugly rims can I fit that look terrible and make the car handle worse? How do put lambo door kits on my rims so I can slam my ride lower than my rims rofl!
Dumb questions should receive inane answers. |

The problem with that is what's dumb to you is a valid question to someone else. That's just the nature of the beast. The more you know the moe there is that's simple to you.

True but sticky's also exist for a reason to answer commonly asked questions. If its not in a sticky or a active thread topic of course Ill answer the question(s) but at some point the user must be held somewhat responsible.
I do not wish to advocate rudeness or be un-hospitable but people must be held to the same standards that the real world holds us to. |
