Power Steering Question

[I searched but couldn't find this issue on the forums; if you have a link to the answer, just post it here. Thanks!]

Sometimes my P/S is really choppy and other times it's smooth as butter. I don't know if maybe the fluid is warming up and expanding, making the pressure increase or what.

My car has 156k miles on it; you think it's time for a P/S flush? It's not low on fluid, I know that much.

BTW - the P/S light is NOT on, so I know that it's working, it's just choppy sometimes.

Thanks for the help!

Maybe you have air in the system. Try to bleed it. You'll just need to turn the wheel all the way to the left/right back and forth a few times while the reservoir is open.

It could also be a mechanical problem with the pump or the valve that controls the pressure.

I would try bleeding the system with new fluid. Pay attention to any metal shavings or rust in the old fluid...that is a sign of trouble somewhere in the system.

I hate to bring something dead back. but I am also having a Power Steering problem.
my light is on, would there usually be a problem with the electronic parts or is it more to do with the fluid?

How long has it been on? Electric PS on the MR2 is one of life's many mysteries. No one knows how it works, and no one knows why it stops working.

As far as I can tell, any advice on here is about as good as going to a voodoo shaman (no offense to those who tried to help).

Give it a day or two and it will probably start working again.

The most common issue lies with a stuck relay. The trick to getting it unstuck is to turn the key to the On position and back to off like 11 times or so in succession.

If that does not work, it could be a faulty relay, but could also be beyond that.

The BGB has detailed instructions on how to test the system to find the issue.

*haha, yeah.

*that's a good way to put a mind at ease though(voodoo).

*I bet so, because it had problems the day I bought it, and then it started working like an angel.

I'll check it out, my buddy is an electrician(I'm not too good when it comes to that, but give me something a little more bolt/belt based and I am set.)
