Need help with tires
Hello everyone,
I'm pretty new to the group and have owned our 2 for over 4 years now but have not done any modifications to it till now. It's a 91 N/A automatic transmission 2 which resides in CA. Here's my problem which I hope someone can help me. I recently purchased a set of rims from craigslist brand new for a very good price. Unfortunately not knowing much about rims and the modifications for the 2 I may have screwed up royally on this one. I hope it's not too bad and that I can still use the rims since I really like them and they were way cheap. I purchased a set of: Style : RS Limited Concept Pro (Racing Hart CP-035 and Rota Sub Zero Style) Size : 17x7 Color : White w/ Polished Lip PCD : 10H 5x100/ 5x114.3 Offset : +43 Only to find out that I should have gotten a staggered set like 17x7F and 17x8R. I have so far installed KYB gas shocks (non adjustable) and Eibach sportline springs which have dropped the car's height by anywhere from 1.5" to 2". I thinks it's more like 1.5". What size tires can I use for these rims and still keep the staggered configuration and what brand and type would work best for everyday driving. I have spoken to tire shops and they told me that I did not have to stagger the tires. Is this possible? What effect would this do to the car? I've always known the 2 to have a staggered configuration. I know the rims are cheepo type rims but this car is my wifes daily driver and our little fun sportscar for the weekends. It will never be drag raced, or taken to a track. Just regular daily driving and maybe a spirited drive through the twisties on weekends. I need all season tires so I can use it during the summer and rainy season here in CA and hopefully would like to get a good long wear on them. Thanks to all in advance for your assistance. I hope I have not screwed up too badly and that you folks will be able to salvage my mistake. Thanks, David Last edited by deflorence; 02-16-2006 at 06:19 PM. |

you dont have to have staggered tire sizes i had 17x7.5 with 215/40/17 tires on mine all of last summer and it handled fine, but if you really want staggered sizes you could probably put a 215 or the next size narrower on the front and 225 on the rear.

when i had 17x7's all around i used 215/40/17 for the front and 235/45/17 in the rears and handled just fine for daily driving.

You need to get yourself some spacers for the rears to fit more flush with the fender. Take another picture with better lighting so we can see how well thoughs tires fit.

I've checked the tires and they are pretty close to the fender. Having the tire fall inside the wheel well gives it the clearance to avoid any rubbing when I hit rough spots on the road.
If I put spacers on the wheels and flush them with the fenders they would look good but I run the risk of the tires rubbing against the fenders each time I hit the rough spots on the road. As I had initially stated on my original posting, this car is a daily driver and commutes an average of 75 miles a day from home to work on various road surfaces. It would not be practical for me to flush the wheels to the fender. Dave |
