backfire popping coming from exhaust

hey guys how are you.
as some may know my car has high idle and i cant figure out why. i managed to clean out the air control valve and it went down to like 1100 and now its back to 1500 and bouncing. it goes up and down up and down.
i do notice its running really bad and weak and i have what seems to sound like a back fire! i have these popping noises coming from the exhaust. is this normal? what is wrong with my car?

Invest in a Genuine Toyota Engine manual. It has tons of stuff for troubleshooting. Mine is out in my garage or I'd scan a copy of the page on exhaust popping.

Maybe a timing or exhaust issue? Are you running an aftermarket exhaust? I think sometimes when you let off the gas a little fuel goes in the exhaust and burns there causing that popping sound.

k....just so you know, idle surge (bouncing) is 90% of the time cause by a leak in the intake system.

Don't know much about the popping except it could be a fuel/air issue. Usually too much air going into the engine. The pops is excess fuel exploding from poor combustion. Could be you need new spark plugs or you do have a bad air/fuel ratio by excess air.

I wouldn't be surprised if you have an intake problem....IE vacuum leak, dirty throttle butterfly, throttle body sensor.
