Problems with my 5sgte build and my fixes

Hey all, just wanted to start a thread on my build and I figured I'd start with the frustrating part.. Everyone posts the glory... but here are the problems I've had and my solutions.. for most there are several ways to handle each i just chose the easiest for the parts we had around the garage

Of course I will post pictures but here is the basic set up:

94 5s block .
3s head turbo exhaust ext.
5s crank machined to accept 3s forged rods
.020 over bore 5s jp pistons

Problems encountered so far.

Oil cooler from 3s will not fit block
Used 5 s oil cooler and adapted to 3s water lines.. Used stanless braded high templines with additional heat shielding for the HFH..

Oil filter will not clear heat shield
Ceramic paint down pipe and remove part of heat shield.
Eventually will move oil filter once I get a kit

Turbo oil feed Inlet not on 5s block..
Going to T off oil pressure sender port and use copper fittings to attach to cut turbo hard line with flange compresoin fittings .
May incorperate off the moved oil filter solution later on.

Must use 5s pressure plate and clutch ...since the 5 s flywheel must be used with the 5s crank. and the bolt pattern is differnet than my 3sgte flywheel (unless you go after market )
Just wanted to throw that in .

Oil pump would bind under proper tourque
Ordered a new one from a different company.. hopefully it was just a bad one

parts needed for setup
pistons
rod
5sfe gasket set
3sgte gasket set
water pump
oil pump
A million freaking trips out for little odds and ends...

Will have it in the car next weekend..
Will post pictures lata today ...

Here is the first batch of pictures I don't have the parts for the turbo oil feed but this will get anyone started (masagsxr i belive you mentioned wanting to try this in another thread)

First up is the Oil cooler.. I had to twist it a little bit from it's origin.. I'm not sure about this quite yet as I haven't been able to test oil feed since I didn't have a pump to throw on ..
I bought the barbed fitting at home depot.. It is actually pretty sweet.. It has barbed ends which make it impossible to pull the darn hose back out.. and it even did the size conversion I needed..

You can see the stainless braided line I used and the hfh heat insulation claped back on .. That should be able to handle all the heat You can throw at it

Here is the cutout of the heat shield for the oil filter... the down pipe was then painted with high temp paint to help the heat not radiate to the darn filter

here is the start of the oil feed for the turbo .. I cut the part that bolted to the 3s block in favor of a flange fittign to be named lata

Again you can see the insulation on the HFH

This is the presssure sender on the head which I plan to T off of

Ok so i've updated my plans.. SInce the toyota oil switch doesn't do crap anyways i'm not going to use it .. Instead I am goign to tap out that oil hole to an american size ( unfortunetely you can't but metric stuf easily over here ) and use it to both supply the turbo and set up a real oil pressure gauge.. i'm even tossign the idea around of reactivating the idiot light on the dash with say an old american car oil sender providing they both read as open circuits when loaded

It would be awesome if you post pics of the oil feed setup once your done. I'm turboing my 3sge, I 'm still making a manifold adapter for the subaru turbo I am using and need to just tweak then weld it up then run water lines and an oil feed. Would like to see how it works out for you because the way you are going to do it sounds good.

yeahs it's really the only way I could see to get oil shot of drilling the block.. and the time to do that was when it was apart and I could make sure the metal shavings didn't get anywhere they weren't supposed too.. I am going to do the setup tommorow so look for pics As far as coolant lines.. they are everywhere and under much lower pressure i wish that was my problem not the higher pressure oil lines

More pictures to come but I am adding to the list of custom stuff.. The intake manifold stays that bolt it to the block need to be customized or extended.. Can be done with some scrap steel and the existing stays

Update on the swap... turned the engine several times with the starter and got 60 psi of oil pressure, no leaks from my new turbo oil lines, and most importantly NO LEAKS!!!!

Engine is in the vehicle and will be turn key this weekend.. Hopefully it goes somethign like this

Turn key then VROOOM then drive and yey

alternative option

Turn Key then (*&#(*$&#(*$&) then lots ofsmashing and more cursing followed by many posts for help on the forumn and cursing and then lots of drinking

Just wanted to add an update.. I was having mega timing issues.. at first I thought I miss-aligned the timing belt but it turns out the timing sprockets are slightly different sizes ... So I used the main sprocket from the 5s and the 3sgte head cam gears ... doens't work ..

You must use the 3sgte main with the 3sgte head/cam drives... Even though they look almost identical they are ever so slightly off.. ohh well guess I have about 3 hours of work ahead of me for tom now .

well i'll know for sure when I get it off tom.. (thank god you can do it in chasis

But the cam gear was like 4 mm so rough math dividing by 2 i think it's gonna be like 2 freaking mm ... too hard to pick up with the naked eye ...
