3SGE swap questions
Well I am thinking about doin a 3SGE swap(non-BEAMS, something like a 2nd GEN) into my 1991 MR2. What all would i need? Would I need the 3SGE ecu and engine harness? Will my 5SFE header bolt up to it? Will the 5SFE 5spd tranny bolt up? What about axles? etc...
I might just drop another 5SFE in with lower miles but just want to keep the 3SGE as an option. LMK, I'm still a noob to the MR2 game. Thanks! Last edited by Lee_91MR2; 05-08-2009 at 12:33 AM. |

No i dont think the stock header of a 5sfe will fit..from what ive read and heard the tranny will bolt up. axles need to be changed because the 3sge has more power than the 5s and will eventually snap your axles

Keep in mind the 1st Gen MKII MR2 uses a 2nd Gen 3SGE

Yea, I am aiming for a 2nd Gen 3sge to simplify the swap a lil more. But I just want to know a few things to see how much things are gonna cost me before I go ahead and try to do it. 5sfe will be my last resort.

If you get a 3sge of the same year, it will plug into all of your body connectors which leaves you only to change out the one ecu plug on the body harness.
Any 3sge works well with s54's including the one that came in your mr2. That means you can reuse your axles. You can also use your 5sfe exhaust system as-is with the gen2. Bolts up with no issue. However, if you go for the gen3, you'll need the gen3 bpipe. You can reuse your 5sfe coil if you purchase 93+ turbo plug wires and cap. If you want to use what comes on a 91 3sge, get a 91 turbo coil for about $55. It's only a little more money to go with a 3sge over a 5sfe. Even the beams can be done fairly cheap. Personally, I wouldn't even consider putting a 5sfe back in a mk2 unless I lived in CA or something. |

I'm trying to look for a 2 gen 90-93 3SGE to drop in. So all would need is to get the 90-93 turbo coil and change the plug on the 5sfe engine harness? And I can still use the 5sfe ECU? If so, I'm probably gonna go ahead and try to look around for a 2 gen 3sge.

Nope, cant' use the 5sfe ecu. Not even close. It's not a big deal though as 2nd gen 3sge ecu's are cheap.
For whatever reason, mr2 second gen motors are a little hard to come by. At least in full swap form. It's not that they aren't common, it's just that most people take the attitude "turbo or nothing". If you can grab a 2nd gen engine harness and ecu off of ebay.co.uk, then that might allow you to use a 3sge you find locally. The engine harness and ecu is 90% of what you need to make a 3sge work. Even if you get a celica gen2, there are only a few additional 3sgte parts that you'd need to buy. -wateroutlet housing -fuel line The rest can be pulled from your 5sfe. Also, if you don't get a flywheel with your 3sge, you can't use the 5sfe flywheel. |

Thank you for all the info!!!
What if I just made a custom fuel line out of stainless steel fuel hose, what size would you recommend? -4 AN, -6 AN, -8 AN? How hard would the 3rd Gen be swap in? would the s54 be compatible? Last edited by Lee_91MR2; 05-08-2009 at 02:50 PM. |

All 3sge's are s54 compatible. I ran my beams 3sge on the stock 91 s54 for a while.
It shouldn't be a problem to custom make a fuel line. Kameleon makes a lot of those, generally cheaper than the stock line. He doesn't currently make one for the gen2 3sge, but i'm sure he could. A gen3 3sge is going to be pretty easy as well. You can get them for about as much as the gen2's. The only problem is that the 5sfe exhaust manifold doesn't fit, so you would have to order up a gen3 3sge bpipe for the mr2. Also, wiring wise, a gen3 is going to have all the same issues as using a 93+ gen2. Not too big of a deal, but something extra to do. |

I was thinking of doing a 2nd gen 3sge into mine, but since I live in CA that wouldn't be any fun.
